Mk5 oil sump rust

Just a quick query, my aunt brought her mk5 golf (1.4) to a mechanic today to get the exhaust changed! While he was doing it the mechanic said he noticed the oil sump was badly rusted and needed to be changed ASAP! He said it's a very common problem on the golfs!
The thing is she had it with a different mechanic last week for a service and he said nothing about it! A Google search also doesn't return anything regarding problems with the sump!

Has anyone heard of it before or be able to give a rough estimate for replacing it?? Mechanic quoted approx €150 for parts and said the labour would be expensive although I don't think he gave a figure!

The labour is a good bit IIRC. Had to cover one on warranty before.

Do the 1.4 not have the plastic sump gaurds. I can't see how it would rust if it has one.

Ah that could be it so the Cl (chlorine) in the salt just eats through most types of metal.

Possibly....although he did say it's very common on the mk5 anyway
She's going to bring it to her regular mechanic before she does anymore!

Maybe it is never heard of it being common on the mk5 I have one and the sump isn't rusted plus mine has the sump under tray so the sump is dry all the time. Sure get a second opinion as you said and take it from there.
