Bored of my 1.4 corolla and looking for something with a bit of power. Later than 2008, budget is 10-12k. Been looking at Golf GTIs, also found a 2.5l Focus ST which looks interesting. Any other suggestions?

Looks very nice. Not sure I want another hatchback though and yeah, the tax is a bit high.

Golf GTi and Focus ST are hatchbacks though.

The tax is going to be an issue on most 2008+ 2.0 litre or above petrol cars as they switched to emissions based tax rather than engine size. As a result your choice will be limited as hardly anyone bought them.

Pick up a nice 06/07 Focus ST for €6-€7k and pocket the other €4-5k and spend it enjoying the car and/or doing some tasty modifications.

An 2008/2009 GTI will be the same as an 06/07 one as will the Focus ST.

Tax is a bit steep, but as you're looking for 2.0+ I'm assuming that's not an issue, but I really like the 2.5 liter turbo Foresters, lots of fun to drive (pretty bad mpg though) something like this, what's your budget like? Don't consider tax to be the end all be all also, if you're looking at an 07 vs an 08 (of similar spec and mileage) and there's like a 10k difference that's a hell of a lot of tax to make up, would take many years.

I was only looking at spending around 10-12k

Ah 10-12k is loads when you're looking at the slightly bigger engine cars in Ireland, could go for an E46 M3 and probably have enough change to tax for the year left over, I would drop the buying post 08 though if you want anything nice, the mileage/use should be your main guide.

there are a good few Bmw E92 325 around on carzone, 218bhp, motor tax at E1080 is just about stomachable IMO... Nice straight 6 petrol engine!

Yeah i know, just veering towards something bigger now I think. I was originally under the false impression that the tax would be lower post 2008.

BMW does look like a great choice, looks like I'd need to get something quite old to get one of those in my price range.

Something like this look like it could be ideal. I see a lot of variance in price. The mileage on that particular one is a little high?

Think I prefer the BMW but still it looks like a nice car.

    :D

One thing I didn't really consider until now... Insurance. Is it going to be ridiculous? Only have 2 years no claims. In my mid thirties though. No points or claims, just a late learner.

Another thing, I'm slightly worried that I'll crash the bloody thing on a test drive, haven't driven anything other than my corolla for years.

I wouldn't be too sure on the insurance, you would need to ring around to a few places and see what's on offer, was quoted 450 on an elise before but that's with full no claims, your age will definitely help though.

Oh well, might have to put this idea on hold for a while.. Rang the AA and they said AXA wouldn't give them a quote for a 325. Only had my full license since September. He's going to try ringing them on Monday but I won't be holding my breath. Any insurers that might be worth talking to? 2 years no claims.

Got a quote from Liberty online. Holy cow. 20 euro difference between the 1.4 corolla and a 325. 1770 / 1790 respectively. To put it in context I am currently paying 690 with the AA.
