I flew to Detroit on United via Newark OP, though I'm sure DL, AA & EI all offer onward connections from JFK.

If a decent price pops up via Toronto, that's also worth considering - as you'll pre-clear US CBP at that airport.

Air Transat to Toronto and a bus?
Detroit is interesting, get out to the Henry Ford museum in Dearborn is you can.

Delta via Amsterdam and book direct from airline.

Delta via Amsterdam and book direct from airline.

I went this route. Delta took over North Western airlines so Detroit is a major hub for them. Despite the importance of this place, they still managed to lose my bag :( for several days.

I would recommend getting to the US (preferably east coast or midwest, wherever is cheapest), and then check either Southwest Airlines or JetBlue to Detroit. If you decide to book with Aer Lingus they partner with JetBlue so it might be cheaper to book the whole thing through them.

Whoever you book with , make sure all flights are on the one ticket.

Direct to Chicago O'Hare on Aerlingus then get a bus or rent a car.

Its not too bad a journey. what part of Detroit?
