But seriously, try a factory reset if you don't mind losing all your Garmin data (back it up to Connect first) After that chance contacting garmin. Also, are those readings coming from a speed sensor or just the GPS?

to ensure its coming from the sensor, spin the back wheel indoors with no signal, get a gear and cadence that you know yields and certain speed and test it. I had to do it last week also.

I had similar readings when the magnet wasn't aligned correctly. There's a little line on the sensor to line it up.

    will try that.

Not meaning to hijack your thread but what's the point of the magnet, other than signal loss? With the magnet installed and a good strong signal, which speed does the device give preference to?

I was getting weird speed readings as well and tried everything with no luck, i was thinking of rebooting the unit back to factory setting until on Saturday it updated itself after a ride and hey presto now its all fine.

Both. It correlates the GPS distance (vaguely accurate depending on signal to possibly couple of meters) with the actual wheel rotation.

The Garmin unit will give preference to the speed sensor. Initally though it may use the gps signal to work out the wheel circumference and hence the speed (it will not do this if the wheel circumference is input manually).

The sensor will generally give a smoother reading than the gps without as many inplausable readings.
