Change broadband provider - lose email address?

I am changing broadband provider from Eircom to UPC.

I have an eircom email address for the last 12 years. Reading older threads some people have said that their eircom address was never removed even though they stopped being a customer years ago.

I was wondering if anyone had information on this? Do you think Eircom will eventually cut this practice out?

Can I keep using my eircom address or should I set up a more generic account like gmail?

Order a free prepay emobile sim. You get an eircom email address with emobile so I don't see why you couldn't keep it.

They do imap for most accounts, just not the really really old ones.

Well if they do it must be a well kept secret within Eircom as my post was based on information provided in the Talk to Eircom forum.

That was two years ago and there is a post further on saying that (in 2013) the settings don't work!

    Hi,
Are these settings still the same? I can't get them to work

The response from the reps in the talk to forum was in January last. Either ways they don't seem to know what is going on and this does not make it easy for customers.
    Hi dub45

eircom do not provide an Imap service

Our website advises that Emails can only be sent via mail1.eircom.net if your PC/device is attached to an eircom network.

If you are using another provider to connect your device to the internet you will need to use their outgoing mail servers.....

Yeah, the first search result should really be an eircom.net support page.

Long time since I've configured it, but it still works. Screenies for anyone who's interested.

But surely that will only work if you are on UPC?

Yeah, SMTP is always via your ISP. If you're with eircom use mail1.eircom.net, if you're vodafone mail.vodafone.ie and so on and so forth.

The inbound IMAP settings will be the same across all.

What you are talking about is not a full imap service. With a proper imap service such as gmail or icloud the isp you are connected to any time becomes irrelevant.

What you are describing appears to be a pop service which is not what most people want nowadays. What you are describing requires the user to change the smtp every time they connect to a new isp. This is not necessary with imap where the same smtp will work irrespective of the isp connected to. Also the users folders will be synchronised.

    Thanks for the replies.

I already have a gmail address so I am going to transition over from Eircom. I use Mozilla Thunderbird as my email program which makes it easy to manage both.

With the improved competition between providers I can see myself moving around wherever the better deals are. So I think gmail would be better rather than tying myself to Eircom and then finding later that they are cutting their email service to non-customers.

That's assuming google don't start charging!

    Cheers.

Just to mention again that iCloud also offers IMAP.

You can do this without paying google a penny,

Simply signup with a domain provider that provides e-mail forwarding (most do) and then set your outbound e-mail address in gmail to me@mydomain.com.

Same affect and it doesn't involve giving any money to google. I've been doing it with gmail since 2004 :)

Imap and smtp are two different protocols.
I have full folder mapping/synch using imap, pop does not support folders.

Moved from Eircom to VF and we still have the @eircom.net account working with MS Office

I moved to UPC this week and it stills works away.

The question is will your eircom email address be always available even though you are a non-customer?

The real question is will your Eircom email address always be available whether you are a customer or not? Other ISPs such as UTV and Vodafone did away with their email services, Eircom could choose to do the same.

The safest option is probably to purchase your own domain and use Google Apps, Outlook.com or a hosted exchange provider as you can always move your domain to a new provider once you own it yourself.

Having said that using the normal Gmail, Outlook.com or Yahoo is probably safe enough, they have such a huge customer base I would say they will be around a long time (though could start charging if the ad supported model were to no longer be viable for them).

It actually is full IMAP. Folders bidirectionally sync.

GMail and co still use SMTP, you have to use it, just they'll accept it from ANY IP, just not their own blocks. With eircom thats not the case, so you'd just have to just add the other common ISPs mailservers as fallbacks. Not perfect, but hey.

I'd agree that eircom email could go the way of the dodo though, so migrate to something more permanent if you still use it.

Even if they don't, you won't get any support from them if you're not an eircom customer. There's someone over on another forum who has forgotten his eircom email password, and eircom won't offer any support at all, so be warned!
