I am not a Sky user but I cannot understand how Sky can charge for a service and not deliver. I don't think you are alone either, I have seen some similar threads. I would ask for a rebate for periods of non- service.
Suggest you post over in the Satellite forum if you cannot get a recommendation here.

Just noticed there is a listing for a satellite technician in the useful numbers in this forum.

Sky will allow you credit on the time you are without service. I have recently had a problem with a rusty arm that holds the LNB. The Sky technician replaced the dish complete. A call out charge is €100 in normal circumstances.

If the dish or the cables are loose, it will cause the signal to be lost especially in strong winds.

My dish was solid but the cables were loose, but a few cable ties and some electric tape and it's perfect now even in storm conditions.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,063 ✭✭✭Cerco

It is not the loose cables that cause you to lose a signal. It is a loose connection that causes this. The loose cables will cause the loose connection. Check your connections on the lnb and make sure they are tight and the cable firmly gripped.

Or just throw your sky box in the bin. A free Sat box is a straight swap for your sky box and it's totally free, you get plenty of hd channels as well. Get yourself a saorview box for the Irish channels and you will be Bill free after set up costs. Best decision I ever made, basic sky package is about 300 quid a year for one room

Quite a few at work, and now including me are having probs with losing signal, yet we all checked cables etc, and my dish is only up a yr, got it replaced by Sky, and losing signal, even on a calm day. Sky reply to us all were the same generic answer "check your cables"...

I'd imagine that it's just a coincidence that you and people you work with are loosing signal. If there was an issue with sky this forum would be full of posts.

I get my BBC/ITV etc from the same satellite as you and I don't lose signal. It is merely an amazing coincidence that you and quite a few at work are having the same problem. Rather than a coincidence though I would say your dish has been poorly installed. The fact that it is up only a year is irrelevant.

Did you check your signal strength and quality?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 174 ✭✭tenbob1

Yes. Input 1 is going intermittently from 0 signal 0 quality to almost full. Even after checking and tightening both cables.

Input 2 is fine most of the time, but still dropping intermittently.

But sky are delivering. They are uplinking to the satellites which are broadcasting down.

The fault is with the OPs own equipment (probably dish alignment).

Called sky about my issue a few hours ago. They are sending out an engineer on Saturday, he will fix/replace what needs fixing FOC.

They are lying. Sky don't use engineers for this, they use installers.

Sky call them engineers so why dont you trot along to their very own "Talk To" forum here on Boards and ask them why they tell people these "lies"

You are probably oblivious to this so I have to break it gently and let you know that your petty, nit picking, grammar correcting posts contribute f*ck all to this forum.

Thankfully I have a reasonably happy life :)

Is not there not some one on this website can do to pull this guy up on all the silly crap he is constantly spouting. The smart comments he makes are getting very boring and he seems as if he is constantly trying to derail threads he gets involved in.

A lot of posters who dont really know the ins and outs in technical terms are being belittled by him every time they post something that may not be the correct terminology, for the most part most contributors here know what a poster may be referencing but ol Winston sees fit to take them to task over it.

My take on the reason why he does what he does is because once upon a time he was a Sky Engineer (whoops sorry winston) and he was crap so they got sense and gave him the sack.........now he holds a major grudge against Sky and their Engineers...oooops i said it again.

Ill prob get a warning for my post as some might see it as back seat modding or an attack on the poster not the post (which its most certainly not) I dont bother posting on this part of the site much more because of his constant nit picking on peoples posts. Its pathetic and it needs to be stopped.

Wow, what a large off topic outburst!
You are entitled to your opinion of course, but please don't post factually incorrect assumptions about other posters whom you know nothing about.

    For you information:-

I have never worked for Sky.
I have never been crap at any of my jobs.
I have never been sacked by any employer.
Sky do employ engineers, but they don't use them for domestic installations.
An engineer is someone with a degree or similar professional qualification.
In many countries it is illegal to call someone without the relevant qualifications an engineer.

Off topic outburst???? Let me ask you a question. Why does it bother you so much what Sky call their engineers and why does some one like you constantly nit pick at other peoples posts? You are always at it and its not wanted or needed. This forum is to help people who may not be in the know and your belittling is not welcome.

I have never worked for Sky.

Maybe you should, you might like it.

I have never been crap at any of my jobs.
Ill take your word on that.

I have never been sacked by any employer.
Im very surprised (again ill take your word on that) you have never been sacked given your attitude towards other peoples lack of correct terminology on here. Do you or did you ever deal directly with customers? If you do/did I bet they love having to listen to your perfect ways.

Sky do employ engineers, but they don't use them for domestic installations.
Ah OK so now you do admit Sky do employ Engineers?

Maybe you shouldn't presume that some Sky installers are not qualified Engineers. If they are they have every right to call themselves engineers.

An engineer is someone with a degree or similar professional qualification.

Thanks for defining that for me.

In many countries it is illegal to call someone without the relevant qualifications an engineer.

Another nit pick. Well done. Im sure the police are busy locking people up for using the wrong description when installers are hooking up Sky TV.

I really don't know why you are complaining. The poster whom I corrected isn't and it is really nothing to do with you.

Well this is the problem you see. Its not your place to correct anyone and you were previously warned by a site admin to desist.

If you feel something is wrong then report the post instead of correcting people as the rest of us have to put up with your persistent and tiresome nit picking.

I'll say no more as you are not worth getting banned for.

As an aside if you left click on a users name there is a nifty solution at the bottom.

I had a problem with intermittent signal loss. I called Sky and somebody from Sierra.ie came out in a couple of days. I dont know what his job title was but he went up on the roof in the lashing rain. The dish was moving in the windy weather so he tightened everything up and no problem since.

My sky was fixed pretty quickly by the "guy", that came out. No charge. No problems since.

Quick question i was hoping someone might be able to answer. Does your sky box have to have an active internet connection in order to use the remote record service or can the signal/instruction be sent via the dish? cheers

It doesn't need an internet connection for remote record.
