So I bought a clocked car last week,a red astra '05 diesel on adverts had a 140k on the clock found out it should over 200k, been to guards and reported.
is there much of a come back with the private seller?
    and yes i know I'm a dumb-ass :mad::mad: :o

There's a very weak criminal provision; to the point of being almost useless. Very little comeback really other than bugging the hell out of them, but that can lead to harassment so be careful.

Sorry for your trouble Mark and no help on your Dilemma.

Any Diesel car not doing 20,000 km per yr to me would always be suspicious.

Have you rang him? He may have bought it clocked unknown to him so clocking could have been done by owner previous to him.

See can you find out what mileage is on the most recent nct cert, and maybe the one before that aswell. Find out how long the seller had the car. Hopefully you can nail the b@stard.

How did you find out its clocked? 140k miles is quite close to 200k km, maybe there was an error?

Still sorry to hear it though, you won't have much of a comeback unfortunately.

I know this comment isn't hugely helpful to the OP but I'm really fascinated about how so many people only carry out mileage checks / mechanical inspections and other very important pre purchase checks AFTER they have bought a car and not before ..........

I did a check on cartell and they flagged it. Had 150K miles on it back in '11.
Is it possible to find out the real milage

So you bought the car first and then checked it out on cartel.

I believe it may be possible to find out original mileage but hat difference does it really make ?
200k is not much on a diesel if you did not pay top dollar for the car and are happy enough in general just move on as trying to sort it may be more trouble than it's worth.
It depends on who the seller is ? Who you are etc if it gets nasty don't think that the Gardai will protect you because they won't they don't have the time or the resources think with your head not your heart.
Don't bother listening to people who tell you what a mistake you made as this is a mistake you won't make again I am sure.

No need to rub it in. Everyone makes mistakes.

Could the information have been incorrectly input in Cartell? I'm sure it happens a lot.

Technically speaking if I sell it on I'm knowingly selling a clocked car, therefore breaking the law.

Not if you inform the purchaser first.
I bought a bmw from the UK a few years back it turned out o be clocked. I drove it for a while and sold it as (mileage incorrect) on the advert. A guy came and had a look he liked the car it was a cheap price and he bought it.
I also stated clearly on the receipt the mileage was incorrect and got the purchaser to sign it.
Lots of cars out there have mileage discrepancies it could have been a speedo changed, an ecu problem that everything got reprogramed etc etc
Cars often come up at auction with mileage incorrect the used car market is a minefield plain and simple.
Nobody died just move on and learn from it I would be happier with a clocked car than one that had been in a bad crash and badly repaired.
