Hi iv bought a 00 Peugeot Partner 1.9 Diesel van and it wont start from cold. Iv had the glow plugs changed but still no difference. If I jump start it .. it will turn over for about 30 seconds and then start to fire.. then it half starts 2 or 3 times .. the starts but misses and is smokey. Then its flys for the day .. runs like a dream. Next morning the same thing. Any ideas please? Thanks. Ian

Considering it starts with a jump is the battery on the way out. With an older diesel like that you need a decent battery as if it doesn't turn the engine over quick enough you'll be there all day. If you do replace the battery get a battery with a high cca (cold start capacity) and the correct ah value.

Im not sure.. iv charged it up and it will only crank 5 or 6 times then its flat. I never thought of the batter really.

See even though it will crank if it doesn't turn over the starter fast enough it won't start the engine. look on the battery and see what the ah and cca rating is if they are too low then that will cause it even if the battery itself is in good condition.

Yea in fairness it doesnt turn over very fast.. but how would the van start fine for the rest of the day?

Hmm could be that alright. .pity the video isnt there anymore. I dont know what to think now... battery? maybe... tappets. ? or air in fuel line. ?

Not sure about the tappets idea, cant see that resolving your problem. A diesel needs compresson and heat to ignite the fuel/air mixture. The compression is the key though. if your battery cant crank the engine quickly enough you wont be able to build enough compression to ingite the diesel. A high capacity heavy duty battery is needed. You should be able to turn it over more than 5 or 6 times without it going flat.

Have you tried pumping the fuel primer a few times before starting its possible its leaking diesel back to the tank overnight.

The fuel filter housing with primer gave trouble you could try putting sealer around the primer where it goes up and down.

I agree that it sounds like a new battery is needed. But that is quite likely to be a symptom of the problem rather than the root cause.

Tight tappet = valve not closing fully = low compression = loads of cranking every morning = knackered battery

With the symptoms the OP describes it is always the tappets on these engines.

Check the glow plug relay also, see is there power getting to the glow plugs, if it starts after cranking for 30 seconds on an indirect diesel then it sounds like it's not heating properly
