Motor insurance needed on Sunday?

I am going to pick up a car tomorrow and I realised I can't change my current insurance over as it is closed at the weekend. I can't seem to amend it on line either. Tomorrow is the only day I can do this as I work all week and if I leave it longer the car will be sold to someone else. Any way round this?

If you can't amend it online and the emergency insurance number won't do it you're snookered I'm afraid, can you buy it tomorrow and pick it up Monday?

It's nearly 3 hours away. Pity there wasn't a short term insurance option. I'm with no nonsense by the way.

Take someone with you who can drive it on their policy

This will be fine, but will cover only third party.
If car is valuable and is damaged it's a bit of a risk.

Try ringing their claim helpline. All insurers have it open 24/7.
I'm with Allianz and that's how it worked few times.
Customer service line open Mon-Fri, and if you need to amend car outside their working hours, you ring emergency line which can make amendment for you temporarily (f.e. until Monday morning).

In the worst case, you can always buy a second policy (online) and cancel it next day. Choose direct debit option with small deposit upfront.
All you will pay effectively is 1/365 of your premium + service charge (will be more in the beginning but you will get refunded).
That's the way to do short term insurance in Ireland.

Go down and buy it, leave it in there yard for the week? Makes the most sense to me as long as you are dealing with an honest enough seller?

It's a private sale so i'll see if the seller is trustworthy. Maybe pay a deposit and come back in a few days. Tempted to try the claim line now though as this would save a lot of hassle.

    What age are you?

Surely you can just get in and drive it? Most policies for anyone over 25 with a full license will cover all other cars (that already have a policy on them) third party.

The seller won't be able to cancel his insurance til monday, so just get in and drive and it's all legal. I really wouldn't be overly fussed about it to be honest.

Not all policies do. A lot don't its a common misconception that many people have found themselves on the wrong side of the law for. The seller may already have a new car leaving the car uninsured. They can amend policies on the breakdown/claim line I have done it that way a couple of times.

Usually stipulate you can't own the other car.

    You are incorrect here bigtime.

    1. OP won't be able to use his "third party extension" to drive other cars, as all policies that offer it, clearly stipulate that car driving must not be owned by the insured. So OP could use this to test drive a car before purchase, but once car is purchased, it's his car and therefore he can not drive it under "third party extension".

    2. I don't think there's any insurer which would require other car to be insured by the owner to make "driving other cars" extension valid. No such requirement. However this doesn't change anything for op because of 1.

    3. Seller might easily cancel his policy before Monday in many cases, but again this is not relevant to OP in any way.

This thread, together with few other threads recently (f.e. one where someone said they forgot to switch insurance back to his car after having rental from garage) just clearly points out, that Irish car insurance system is faulty, because it leaves so many opportunities for people to drive uninsured, sometimes even unknowingly.

Unless they're insured by the AA...

I bought my car on a Sunday last Feb and FBD just said send in an email requesting permanent transfer from whatever time on whatever day and they'd automatically cover me and just follow up on Monday.... Just to include my name, address, old reg , new reg policy number, and the time you want to transfer your insurance at.
