Dealing with a very minor robbery?

Very small in comparison, but this the first time it has happened to me, so i just want to know where to go from here.

Long story short, I have a feeling that either one of my flatmates stole one of my items from my kitchen, or the builder who came in to fit in the sink. The item was on the counter I remember, and I didn't get a chance to put it away before he came in.

Now the thing is this was only a 1.49 priced item from Dealz. Even though it is not a nice feeling having something of yours taken, and not being able to speak up about it, at the same time, i feel ridiculous doing it, considering how cheap it was and how I can easily go down 2moro and get a replacement. If it was more expensive, it would probably feel i should say something.

What should i do? Should I just let this pass but just start putting things out of sight straight away, or should I say something to the landlord (he knows the builder well, so he would be able to contact him) in case he goes for bigger things?

Very first time dealing with something like this, so dont know what to do!

Is there any chance that it - whatever it was - fell off the counter when work was being carried out, or when the builder was moving stuff?
You've only a suspicion and no proof. And there's no guarantee that it was stolen, it could have been mislaid, borrowed, used and put somewhere else (for example, a pen or a lighter, always grow legs and walk elsewhere) or even put away by someone else.
For something worth €1.49 that is replaceable I'd just write it off.
BUT in saying that I would suggest that if something is of value to you, regardless of its material or cost value, then it is probably best that you be more vigilant with your belongings. And I'd repeat the same for more expensive or high value items and things like your wallet, credit/debit cards and cash and not to leave stuff like that lying around, like if you had a big withdrawal to pay a bill or rent or you get a gift of cash for your birthday or christmas, then make sure it is in a safe place that nobody knows about (and that you yourself can remember) or that it is put into a bank/post office/credit union account rather than in an envelope or lying around in a bundle in your room.
There is no harm in being vigilant with your belongings in general, regardless whether something was stolen or not.

Was it like food or a pen or something?

Not worth it. But you have learnt to be vigilent now.

Have you said to your flatmates "Hey, did any of you see an xxx, it was on the kitchen counter?" It could have been moved, put away, borrowed or indeed stolen. But rule out all the other possibilities first.

Chances are if one of your roommates took it, they will give it back claiming to have borrowed it. If the builder took it, it's gone.

That's what i thought as well, but my mind tends to go towards the worst scenario these days, because I use to be the type who thought the best of people, only to get f**ked over, and would never speak up for herself if it was obvious people were walking all over me.
So the possibility of having something like that happening again gets right under my skin. I know well it is a suspicion and I have no proof, that why I came on here to ask for advice.

Any chance op you could tell us what it was that you think was taken? As someone already pointed out, depending on the item it could have inadvertently been used and thrown into toolbox if it were a knife or cloth or something. Likewise if it were a mug it found have been broken accidentally and binned. If you give us an idea what it was perhaps we can offer a scenario other than it was stolen.

I don't think anyone here can tell you one way or the other if this mysterious unnamed item was actually stolen. I can't speak for anyone else here but I've accidentally thrown things in the bin that I didn't mean to. They can get mixed up with other items etc. Very easily done. I'm pretty certain the remote from the telly got knocked into the bin when we were redecorating. You're very quick to jump to the worst possible conclusion here when the explanation could be a lot simpler and less sinister. What exactly was the item anyway? If you told us it might help us give you better answers.

OP I think you're making a bigger deal out of this then it is. It's not a "minor robbery", it's the potential theft of an inexpensive item.

You're not even sure it was stolen, you haven't told us what it was. At 1.49 it won't break the bank either way. I think you need to move on and change your outlook. Don't automatically assume the worst of people, and making a mountain out of a molehill is good for nobody.

If you've had something hapen to you that's damaged your faith in others, i can understand how something small can be upsetting.

Maybe just mentioning has anyone seen 'xyz' when your flatmates are in might help clear it up.

I realise the thought that someone you share a place with might 'take' something, even something from Dealz isn't nice but try not to let it get to you.
