BVC coils issue

    Hi,

I've been using my nautilus mini with BVC coils for a few weeks now and it's been great. I was having a couple of drinks last night and was reusing a dry burnt coil but it wasn't vaping right so for the first time in a while I put a fresh out the box one in.

It was really loud, not gurgling, not crackling, just loud. Like a UPC box taking off kind of loud. I'm using 6mg nic so don't get a strong throat hit but this was giving an unusual scratchy throat hit. I should have changed it out but didn't and carried on vaping last night and today until around 2.

Fast forward to now and my chest is feeling quid tight. I have no breathing conditions and have never had a chest infection in adulthood and don't know of any in childhood. I changed out the coil for a new one and exactly the same noise and throat scratch sensation. I've changed over to an aerotank and no problems. I've been using the same liquid consistently since last week and am using the same stuff in the aerotank.

Has anyone experienced similar? I've googled it and there are quite a lot of concerns about BVC coils due to the ceramics and some videos that showed them falling apart which seems to have translated to "the ceramics fall apart and you inhale them." I'm not sold on that just yet and haven't found anyone dealing with my specific noise + uncomfortable throat hit problem.

Any ideas? Sorry for the long post.

Hmmm. that's weird. I've been having very similar problems this week, can't figure out why.

Last week I was vaping 70VG through Nautilus BVCs with the airhole drilled out to 3mm with no problems. Changed over to a new pack, maybe didn't let it prime enough and boom, burnt/shorted coil. First one ever. Had to throw it out, NEVER had to do that with a nauti bvc before. Stuck a new one in, better primed but still getting a burnt taste far to quick so googled around and saw that aspire have changed the wick holes larger so thought maybe thats what was letting me vape such high vg before and that my 'new' pack were actually the old style.

So loaded up the tank with some 80pg that I'd been putting through a cheap little bvc ego type perfectly but again back to the burnt taste! I'm now vaping it on the 2nd smallest airhole, I haven't used that since I first got it 6 months ago. Really annoying, never had any trouble with them before. Was thinking about getting a full size but I'm going to wait and see if this is just a dud pack/blip and if the updated coils are working well before I do.

It's definitely making a bit more noise than before aswell, a real crackling sound. Constantly taking primer puffs off it and still getting problems. I bought these ones from FT when I was getting something else there and they're authentic but I'm wondering if they are more likely to get dodgy ones?

No real help I'm sorry. Mine are definitely not wicking well enough/burning too hot though. I hope they haven't changed the filler material, I don't think the ceramic is a problem. Joyetech delta look the same/worse but only when bone dry. I've taken apart a good few bvcs apart after I'm chucking them to see how they held up and they always seemed in tact.

EDIT: The thing with Aspire and the 'ceramic' is, the term is kind of confusing. They refer to it now as 'ceramic paper' but at one stage they called it 'fibreglass' and after a bit of a ****storm changed it. They also put up some detailed testing results when people first started querying it, but then pulled it. Atlantis looks to be going 100% cotton from now as well. I don't know.

My idea of 'ceramic' is something like stone, even a pizza stone. As long as it's porous enough I think this could be incredibly safe. It could withstand massive temperatures with no degradation so as long as it's wicking well, it would be ideal. Busardo had a proper 'ceramic' head clearo (Cera Vape) in his queue but never reviewed it. It has a pure little ceramic rod wrapped in Kanthal as a coil. The blurb said it promised the purest flavour/longest lasting coil around but they've taken off at all as far as I can see.

Thanks for the reply AccaGuest. It does sound like a similar issue. I'm a bit embarrassed about ny post now because I've woken up today and have a rotten chest cold, ha. So seems like a coincidence although I'm sure the nautilus was scratching my throat independent of the cold because the kanger isn't.

Just for clarity so we have more "facts". Apart from the 2 that came with the nautilus, all of my coils are from the same 5 pack, so it seems unlikely that they changed the components in my coils. I'll stay in the kanger until the cold clears up and update if any repeats or anything.

My temporary conclusion is that I had 2 dodgy coils and a cold :D

the only time i get a scratchy throat hit off nautilus is if the 510 threads are in bad need of a clean or if there is loads of liquid sitting under the drip tip.
Not that any of that makes any sense to me, but its been my experience :p

Thanks for that Beans. I checked the threads and drip tip and no issues there. I just tried the nautilus again and it was still noisy but is less scratchy/painful. Maybe it's just the fact that the nautilus chucks more vapour do coupled with the onset of a cold it was causing scratching.

Acca, what tank are you using with your mini? I'm using the steel tank with the little penis shaped viewing window so I'm considering that maybe there's an invisible crack in the tank somewhere that's causing the increased noise. I'm going to try out the stock tank on it later and see if there's any changes there.

Yep, I have the cock & balls tank myself. Tbh I've always found the vape off bvcs different than all the other types (a little scratchier and less smooth) and I don't even find them similar to cartos even though that's what they were billed as sort of in the beginning. I just found the flavour so consistent I always stuck with them. BDCs could be great out of the box but really diminishing returns with them for me.

I might have just out grown them tbh. I was trying to leave them set at 14.5w (I thought these could handle near 20?) but not a chance with the last few. They've been having trouble with much over 10. No point in that atm. I see as well it says 3.3v-5v on the coil, so I'd be pushing that with 14w as they usually read a little high for me on my devices. I thought it was 3.3v-6v for some reason.

Could be just a bad pack as well. I ordered one new coil to see if it's better and also an Eleaf GS Air because I can't stop buying things. Don't know why the eleaf would be better considering the price but who knows.

Just threw another coil in and same noise, same scratch. I tried the glass tank and no real difference. I'm stumped, I was absolutely loving it last week and now it's really pissing me off. I miss the simplicity of sticking a rollie in my mouth and lighting it

Ah I'm done with these for the moment, can't figure out what's going on.

Off to find the airiest dropper I can and just get used to carrying a small juice bottle around.

Acca, have you been using the same liquid in it since discovering the issue? I went from great to awful with the same juice despite the juice being ok in an aerotank but tonight I put a new juice in the nautilus and it's a huge improvement! I think it's possible that I've developed a bit of an intolerance to the liquid I was using (I'm bot convinced cos I was like 30ml in when the issue arose) but the aerotank gives such a weaker vape that it's less pronounced in the aero.

It's not conclusive yet but I've been vaping on the nautilus since about 8:30 with no issues. It's even quieter, but it does have higher VG than the previous.

Tbh Richie, I've changed so much about my vaping recently I don't know what's affecting it the most. I think maybe I'm punishing it too much.

I was vaping 50/50 juices at about 8 watts on the 3rd/4th largest airholes. I'm thinking now this was breaking the coils in gently. Recently I drilled out one of the holes to 3mm, started trying 70vg juice and looked to start it at about 12w and move to about 14.5 depending. It could just be I'm not doing this right as I never did it before or that it was always like this and I'm only noticing it now as I'm pushing it more, not sure.

I stuck a new coil in today, 1.8ohm with the bigger wick holes and some 70vg I've been using in my egrip. Let it prime for 20 mins, put it at 11/12w and it just wasn't happening. Dry/burnt taste far too much. Turned it down to 8w and closed the airflow a bit and no problems in fairness. Changed out to some 80pg later and cranked everything back up but still not what I was used to, I've just set it aside now.

I picked up an Atlantis in the for sale thread anyway so if that can vape set to (a low!) 14w I'll just move to that.

I'm thinking the bigger airflow is the problem but the thing is, I changed the airflow about 3 weeks ago and didn't notice any bad performance until last week. Hardly the end of the world, just surprising more than anything, these things were pretty bulletproof for me up to now.

Whats the story with the bigger wick holes in the bvc coils. Picked some coils up over the weekend and the wick holes are considerably bigger than previous.

Yeah, they're huge alright. They should make wicking better all things considered. Big surprise though.

This seem likes the one, it's on the list.

OP BVC come in cotton versions now. So maybe give it a week or two for stocks and grab a box of those. It may have been the ceramic that was bothering you. Although im skeptical about that, theres a lot of negative hype around it lately but I have never had a problem. If anything I would consider them safer as I never get a dry hit on BVC even with thick liquids.

been reading about the bvc coils the past few days, doesn't fill me with confidence.

switching to cotton only coils now seems they didn't have confidence in there ceramic paper to begin with

Been watching pbusardo China vid's and he went to Aspire in the last one and they talked briefly about the switch to cotton along with the copper/nickle plated Atlantis

He has vids up of his visits to Innokin and Kanger aswell and the next one is a clone factory

    Thanks for that Stealth, interesting.

Something I noticed was when they are testing the amount of puffs an atomiser will give the vapour is flying out of the clearos including what I'm pretty sure is a nautilus mini. Is this how they should operate when firing one up without actually vaping? If I fire my nautilus mini while it's not in my mouth no vapour comes out at all which I only tested after developing an issue with them.

ant more news about those BVC coils for aspire? I am a bit scared now, what would be a good alternative to the aspire mini as I am looking for a clearomiser that will go well with the Istick mini.
