How to get Emergency Tax back?

    Hi,

I started a new job 2 weeks ago and got paid for them 2 weeks yesterday (Friday). When I started, I handed the HR person my P45 and she sent it off to Revenue. Earlier this week I received an Amended Tax Credit Certificate - 2015 from Revenue, which stated my current employer. However, I got what I believe is emergency taxed on my first pay. Almost a half of my pay has been taxed. What and who will I contact to get it back? How long are the waiting periods and what is the payment method?

All help is appreciated and questions are welcome. Thank you very much!

Your employer will have put u on emergency tax from the start
On next pay day they will enter the details they got from the revenue and you will get back what u overpaid in first pay packet. The following week after that your net pay should be the norm going forward

Hmm. I emailed the HR person in my company who told me to email the Payroll person, who in turn told me to contact Revenue? It's seems as if they have no idea what to do. If I was to contact Revenue, what specific department should I call?

    Thanks

Also, to add, some people who started the same day as me, still haven't provided their P45 yet they didn't get emergency taxed? Any idea why?

If the tax credit certificate you received is correct Revenue won't be able to help you. They've done what they needed to do on their end i.e. Allocated your standard rate band, credits and USC bands to new employer. Now your payroll department needs to update their end, and you will get any overpayment of tax back in your wages not from Revenue separately

I think I might give Revenue a call on Monday. Just to explain the situation because Payroll don't seem to know what's going on.

    Thanks

It should go through soon after your employer receives a tax credit cert from revenue. They might issue a cheque or pay directly into your bank account along with your wages whenever it gets processed. I was on emergency for about 2months after starting my last job and received payment in two lump sums.

Fair enough but until payroll change it on their end you will continue to be emergency taxed

Yeah I know what you mean. I'm paid on a monthly basis so it will definitely be a wait.
