    Hey lads,

Someone in the house is looking to get a laptop for under 300 but possibly stretch to 350.
She needs it for music downloading, light surfing and some Netflix/YouTube.

Any ideas? She has a tablet already. I have looked myself and just keep getting celeron processors in the laptops which I believe are almost obsolete.

A desktop build is out of the question.

    Look forward to the answers

If the usage is so light why is an i3 a dealbreaker?

well its not really but i would prefer not to pick up anything less myself. Plus, from what i have read up on, the celeron are awful by today's standards?

Doesn't pentium come between i3 and celeron?

A Celeron would suit if their needs are as you described.

    Reduced i3 here: http://www.did.ie/fujitsu-lifebook-4gb-500gb-core-i3-laptop-a512-0m7312gb-prd

Ex display model so probably not ideal.

Dell have i3's starting at about 379.

A Celeron or Pentium would be fine for those uses though, but look for CPU's based on the i3 architecture and not the new wave of atom-based Celerons/Pentiums (you're right - these are quite slow).

Not all of them, there are some quad-core pentiums out there at over 2.15ghz/core which ain't too shabby at the price point.

They are all atom based and low end. For a little bit more than these cost, you can get an i3 which is vastly superior. I have no issue with pentiums and celerons based on proper core architecture, but I think Intel are cheeky labelling the new atom-based ones with the same name as the older 'true' ones.

They're good to OK value in laptops for 199-299ish, but lately I've seen them appearing in 500 euro laptops which is a disgrace.
