Surround sound on Wii U

    Lads, tricky one here.
I'm trying to hook up my Wii U to get the best sound possible.

I've recently bought a nice soundbar, which I have hooked up to my TV. I connect them via HDMI. I'm also using the ARC HDMI port on the TV. This has the advantage of me not having to change the input source on the soundbar when I change the input source on the TV.

So at the moment I can get sound no bother from the digibox and the Wii U. The problem is I'm not sure if I have it setup right.

I went into Wii U TV Settings and went to the audio section. On this section is has "Surround", "Stereo" and "Mono". Clicking each of these options will play 5 chimes. Stereo and Mono play all the chimes, but when I select Surround, I can hear the first 2 chimes, then the last one, so basically the 3rd and 4th chime are missing.

Now considering I have the Wii U hooked up to the my TV via HDMI, and my TV hooked up to my Soundbar via HDMI(ARC), I'd presume that I'd be able to hear all the channels in the surround sound test in the menu.

The sound is still good and all, but I'd hate it if I was capable or having surround sound and not taking advantage of it (even if its virtual). Has any set surround sound up using a soundbar? I don't know enough about ARC to know if the Wii U supports surround sound over it. My TV and soundbar also have optical, but apparently its not as good.

Also, on the sound settings on my TV, there are 4 options under "Digital Audio Out". They are:
    PCM
    Dolby Digital
    DTS
    DTS Neo 2:5

PCM is selected because the rest are greyed out.
The TV is a Samsung UE46F6500 and the soundbar is a Samsung HW-H550.

    Thanks for any advice.

Most TVs will only pass-through Stereo sound from other sources (such as a console or satellite box) through ARC. ARC (usually) only outputs surround sound from something directly in the TV (such as a media player, Saorview/Freeview). It's not whether your Wii U supports it, it's the TV that has to.

With the optical connection, again usually TVs only pass through Stereo from other sources. While some will pass through Dolby Digital or DTS this is no good for the Wii U as it only outputs Lossless surround sound which requires HDMI.

If you want surround from the Wii U, you will have to hook it up, using HDMI, directly to a soundbar/AV receiver that supports lossless surround sound. Otherwise pick Stereo in the Wii U settings.

    OK thanks.

That leaves me one more question.

The soundbar does have HDMI in. If I go from Wii -> telly, which is the current setup, to Wii - > soundbar, will the video somehow go from the Wii through the soundbar via ARC to the telly?

Yes, the video will pass through the soundbar to the TV. Although, looking up the specs of that soundbar I don't think there's any point. I think Stereo is the best it'll do from the Wii U.
