I've a problem with my Sony Xperia z2 getting hot at the back while using it and also during charging. Battery is draining quickly too. Any advice as to why this is happening?

Android has a few bugs that can cause this. Try restarting your phone and charge it again.

As always, first step, put your phone in safe mode for a day or two. Record its performance, then and only move on to other solutions.
    Two outcomes.
    1. If performance is still bad, you've a problem with firmware or battery.
    2. If performance improves, you've a problem with software, typically your apps. Check battery stats what is eating battery. If no improvement, back up everything to google servers and do a factory reset.

I found that the media services was making my z eat battery and heading up. usually due to faulty media files getting it stuck

I have found the problem, it was the RTE News Now app that was the culprit

Found the same problem on my new phone. I reported the issue but I think since I cleared the data on the app I haven't seen it since.
