I think plenty of people around were using these before during their testing stage and that's how I managed to get the email. They have a Valentine's Day sale on with offers of up to 70% off for a 24 month sub.
Anyway, you have to click the link on the email so I have linked the online version of the email.
    <snip>

I understand that it looks dangerous, but I assure you its not!

I was thinking to sing up if it was cheap as it could come handy but looks like it's a very missleading discount, the 70% looks like it's if you multiply the monthly rate by 24 months and do the discount from that price, not from the 24monts rate.

    Without link prices are

    Discounted price

I'm already on a 12 month sub with these. I wonder if I was to purchase the 24 month sub would it add on at the end or override my 12 month sub?

Does anyone know if this service allows for anonymous surfing, kind of like a vpn does?

It does say the following on their website, but not sure if that means it provides the same security as a vpn?
All Smart DNS Proxy servers are secured and encrypted. There is also no logs in our network so all your queries are anonymous. [\quote]

    I just bit the bullet.

However, it's a recurrent payment plan - you pay the same price every two years.
I didn't spot that before I signed up. Now, to figure out how to stop that lark...

EDIT: I suppose I'll just use the cancel option :)

Hmm I set it up there now, purely to access US Netflix, but the quality of the Video doesnt seem to be very good.

My phone also refused to connect to WiFi till network quality improved lol.

Maybe your ip address has changed?

    From their website....

Remember whenever your Modem/Router IP changes, our service will stop working for you. You will need to LOGIN to Smart DNS Proxy and UPDATE your IP address. So our system will check your IP address and add your new IP to our database. Then you will be able to continue using our service. You can take this step from any pc connected to your modem/router. If this is the first time you setup, we also suggest you to login with your PC to our site from the same Wired/Wireless network to show our system your IP address.

Honestly, the quality of video is nothing to do with the Smart DNS service, simply as it is only the DNS settings that have changed. If it was a full VPN (where the video travels through a server on another continent, for example) it could be claimed that was affecting the video quality.

I can vouch for this service, very good indeed. Not really a bargain as such, it is on offer every couple of weeks at this price. It is a great price though, especially if you don't require a full VPN.

I use mine on a WD TV Play device, and watch US Netflix almost every evening instead of Sky. Don't expect this to work on a Roku player, as there is no possibility to change the DNS on Roku.

I've been using these for years, only thing is my ip updates everyday so whenever you go on a site like bbciplayer for the first time that day it will ask you to activate it again which takes 5 seconds max.

I signed up to this last night, and I have used it before. But I can't see any information on the website about weather you can use multiple devices? ie Laptop/PC/Phone, I assume one subscription covers me for all?

    Thanks

No its still a proxy, just the DNS Server is telling the machine which proxy to use.

The link is one the I got in the email that was
    http://1u6t.mj.am/nl/1u6t/sqw3z.html?a=eqpGrh&b=54af6129&c=1u6t&d=e4525527&e=de2fd340&email=**********%40****.ie

I removed all the other stuff and put in:
    http://1u6t.mj.am/nl/1u6t/sqw3z.html

And you had bothered to check, you'd see what an affiliate link looks like from this site:

But don't let that get in the way detective.

If you re-read my post- I didn't mention proxy. That it is a proxy is taken for granted. What I said was that the full video stream does not need to travel through the server like in the case of a VPN. Therefore, the buffering has nothing to do with the service.

I didn't pass my detective exam, I flunked. At least I'm consistent.

It does. The DNS server redirects the url for the video stream to a proxy run by SmartDNS.

If you netstat the streams you can see iPlayer for example is not coming in via an IP address owned by the BBC.

Congestion can still be a problem if the proxy server it redirects you to is overloaded.
