I just looked at the winsor motors site and it would seem that you are doing him a favour giving him 22k for the car. Would yours not be worth 4k against a new car. Sounds like a great deal for him!.

Are you willing /able to ungrade that much. If you are driving a car worth 1500 you might be happy doing that . a change to a car worth 25 and you could get fair lonely after the money.
You could buy a new corolla diesel for similar money.

Also you would be buying private not off a dealer. i know there will still be manufacturers warranty. Car could be devalued by having 2 owners in a year as well when you come to sell.
To get a better indication of the value , go to the main dealer and ask him how much to upgrade to a new quashqai.

The other thing is you dont want to fall out with your father in law. He wants the best price for the car, you want to get it for as cheap as possible. is it worth falling out with him

good points.... yeah 20k is a huge chunk for a new car and i wouldnt want to be a logger heads with him if something did go wrong with it...

But look at it this way, if you traded in your car against the new Qashqai, you'd get 4k scrappage, so it would cost you 28k. If you pay 22k plus you car you've valued at 1.5k, you're paying 23.5k for a year old car.

If he traded in the car, it would cost him 28k...plus the car. You can't just ignore that. The difference is €6k for the OP, between the new car and the year-old car (28k and no "old" car vs 22k and no "old" car)

It's based on the assumption that the OP actually wants/needs a qashqai over every other car out there.

I was just comparing the scenario where OSI was suggesting the difference between them was 4.5k (28k vs 23.5k, as he didn't seem to actually factor in the cost of the lost car when buying new).

    To OP:
The father in law's car seems to be decently priced (compared to 141/142 qashqai's on carzone), but as the value of your current car is fairly low, the added €6k to buy new (utilising the scrappage scheme) would be quite tempting.

It mostly comes down to whether you really want a Qashqai though. You say it drives well, but you don't say if you're looking for a change of car. You also say you don't know much about Qashqais, so you would probably be best off test driving it some more if that's possible. And, definitely factor in the potential for awkwardness if you run into any issues with it, I wouldn't be a big fan of buying something off family, and buying off in-laws could be more worse.

I've test driven it a few times and i do like it as a drive but that comparing against my 11 year old car.... it has a lot more power! I normally wouldnt like the look of the quasqui but that particular model looks really nice.... i'm not in love with it though but if i got a good deal i could be tempted.... im late thirties and never really had a nice new car so am tempted to splash out..... in saying that i havent look too hard into the alternatives! :) ..
I'd prob hold onto what ever i buy for at least 6 years
