Travel Insurance for over 80

    Hi,

My Dad turned 80 before Christmas and himself and my Mum are off to Spain for a week in early May. He didn't realise that there would be such a significant increase in his travel insurance because of his age. My Mum is 69.

They have the holiday booked but some companies are looking for in excess of €270 just to cover him for a week.

Can anyone recommend any reputable travel insurance company that would cover them for a reasonable rate?

    Thanks

If he has health insurance he could talk with them and see if they do travel insurance. The fact that he has his health insurance with them could help with the premium.

He has Laya insurance but they're looking for €300 + for a single trip. Thanks anyway for the suggestion.

    That seems off the wall!!!

Have a look at the age action Ireland website. They have a list of travel insurers with details of their age restrictions. (Would love to provide link, but that is beyond my limited skills:()

Yes it is crazy. I hadn't thought of that. Thanks. Link is http://www.ageaction.ie/sites/default/files/pdf/Travel%20Insurance%202010.pdf. I'll give that to the mother now and she can make a few calls tomorrow. Cheers

No problem at all. Hope it gets sorted and they both have a lovely trip.

If the prime motivation was medical insurance for a short trip to Spain I'd reflect on if

    1. EHIC provides enough cover for when in Spain
    2. Laya would cover cost of repatriation

If both of these seem OK then perhaps all that is missing is the travel element of the insurance ?

As Olddog says for EU travel there may not really be a need for travel insurance, your rights are protected for delays in flights etc so what else might be required if you have the EHIC?
