Hi, does anyone know how long I would be waiting on an Mri in a public hospital for my spine. Could pay for it privately but would need to use the public system for treatment as don't have insurance. Thanks.

It probably depends on the hospital you are attending. I.v got MRI.s and CT.s scans done in Euromedic, paid for them, got my CD with the result on it. Brought it to the Consultant in the public hospital, who downloaded it onto the hospital
system. Maybe ring the MRI department and get a rough idea of waiting time. Best of luck.

I could be wrong but it depends on the urgency and the type of pain your in, if any? If your in agonizing pain your doctor should refer you pretty quick.

Like the other poster i paid €200 euro for my MRI and got the cd\report there and then.

    Good luck anyway..

A lot depends on where you are based. In many places a GP cannot refer you directly for a public MRI but can only refer you to a consultant who then decides if you need a MRI or not. These consultants usually have long waiting lists.

Normally you get your MRI done privately if you are willing to pay and then ask your GP to refer you to the public system for treatment. They can included your MRI report in the referral.

    It depends on the urgency.

Typically speaking 9 months to one year is the average*. Some have to wait a lot longer. Other more serious cases may be a lot less e.g 3 weeks. Simply put if you think you can't afford to wait a year, that it won't be classified as urgent and you can afford to go privately then by all means do that.

*So really you're looking at a year and half. Six months to see the initial consultant and 9 months for the scan.
