Hi , My husband was taking the kids to school yesterday and was coming out of our street on to a mini roundabout, he was stopped when someone rear ended him. They exchanged details and gaurds know about it. The lady doesnt want to go through her insurance, she said she will pay for the damage. He is waiting on a full est for the damage but the chap down in the garage said it is going to cost at least 1500.

Just wondering if she still wants to pay without getting insurance involved, how long would my husband have to give her to pay for it.

I've rarely seen it end well when a 3rd party offers to deal privately. Involve insurers from day one. I'm not suggesting taking them to the cleaners or anything, but it is the fastest, less argumentative way of putting things right

Ring their insurers and let them you wish to lodge a claim and that you expect them to inspect your car urgently.

This just isn't going to work. The Quantum is too high for a normal joe soap to front up for.

Speak to your insurer. If she is really interested in keeping her No Claims Bonus, her own insurer will allow her to repay them their outlay and treat the claim as if it never existed.

don't be doing "the decent thing". Speak to your Insurer, it's what they are there for.

Speak to your insurer, then speak to theirs.

I dont advocate out of insurance deals, because it never works unless its a scuff or someone bumps your door in a carpark.

The third party will think 'ah sure 300 - 500' euro an ill be fine.

In rear ends that is rarely if ever the case.

My better half was hit last week. The two ladies thought there was no damage until i got there. I checked the bumper and the crash beam was gone the boot lid wouldnt close properly. I called it on the spot at about 2500 for parts labour and paint. The third party was shocked and looked at me like i had two heads.

Sent it to her insurers repair centre

Quote - 2500 Euro on the head.

Thats the difference between people who dont know what they are talking about to people who know the price of car parts.

    Best of luck OP!

agree 100% insurance all the way. I was rear ended last year and it was 1400€ in total for repairs and an xray. Good luck asking someone to pay for an xray for your neck (if necessasry) as sure they barely touched you! :P

If someone offers to pay they at most should be given 24 hours, they either have the cash to fix it or they don't which is what they have insurance for. Rarely have I seen anything properly settled where the other person offers to pay instead of go through the insurance.

Way does the insurance pay out actually work. Does the other parties insurance company pay the panel beaters directly?

    Variant on Insurer and claimant.

If you're claiming from your own Insurer they will generally insist on paying directly.

A third party insurer may also insist on paying directly but cannot enforce this as it's your material loss so you should be entitled to receive the payment yourself if you so wish.

Don't buy into the notion of she wants it looked at by someone who can fix it up for a fraction of the price. It's not her choice where or who repairs it, your husband did the right thing in leaving the insurance companies handle it from there on.

Good call. The liable party has some cheek requesting to have someone look at it haha. That's normally where these things go south relatively quickly.

I was liable in an incident in a carpark two year ago, tapped into a Mercedes. I accepted liability for the incident and asked the guy to get me a quote and I'll see if its worth sorting myself. Came back to me with a quote of nearly €3000 from some independent place, with it saying the entire bumper and some body work had to be replaced. The word tip is probably too strong to even outline what happened.

I knew it was a bogus quote but respected I was liable so couldnt be making arguements to have someone else check it. Went through the insurance company and squared off with them to have my no claims re-instated...the sttled amount was €240 or something to that effect....
