Folks, I have an old mains powered 500GB external hard drive. I would like to get a media player with 2tb internal storage so I can plug into the TV and play my movies directly. TV has USB & HDMI.

What type of devices should I be looking at? Most of the ones I see are more like network type players.

    hi

i have a few multi media boxes -popcorn hour, iomega etc in the family and was looking to get another for children at a more basic level like the iomega.

I have spent hours trying to find ones for sale with very lillte luck , at one stage you had a pick of the iomegas in all the shops but no one seems to have any and the online shops ( ebay , pixmania etc ) all seem to be sold out .

anyone know if the iomega multi media box is gone or what ?
Any one got another recomendation with similar money - that is 500gb -1 tb drive anywhere between €90-150€

    thanks for any help

Not the easiest to setup, but we use a Raspberry Pi at our house. It is hooked up to a USB hub and has 2 2TB drives attached. Omxplayer, the software used to play media, has handled everything we’ve thrown at it so far.

As I said, it isn’t the easiest to set up but you can do more with it if you’re prepared to sink some time into it. Ours has a Samba share set up so every device in the house can stream from it, it has a LAMP stack, is used as a torrent seedbox, etc.

The device itself is £35, but with the accessories you’re looking at closer to €100.

Thanks Aimead , sounds great for me -will look into what you are doing but am looking for much simpler plug and play for the kids that they can take to sitter etc with them.
have masses of downloads on my box for them and want to move over to their own , no wireless required or seeding .

    thanks again

Have you considered getting a cheap netbook with a HDMI out? Might be the handiest solution.

dont think i would get it in my price bracket and would need a little bit more minding .Thats the great thing of units like the iomega , kids dont need to be minded with it as much

    thanks for your thoughts

    I recently got this:
    http://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B004VR83EI/ref=twister_B00NU1O6Y2?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1

And it seems very good so far. Connects via HDMI and it has played everything without issues so far.

Easy to use and has worked very well. I have only had it for 4 days, but no complaints so far.

By the way, if in Ireland you will need to use ParcelMotel to get it.

What pi model are you using in your setup?
