Added value to car if it has sat nav/toys?

I see on donedeal that the f10 5 series sat nav/hard drive/wider screen can be retrofitted.

This makes the display larger, adds nav with 3d maps and also a hard drive for ripping albums to. Can also play dvds on the move.

This is bmw OEM kit, not aftermarket so should add value come resale. My question is, how much extra do you think this would be?

    Thanks in advance

Depends on the age of the car, I'm guessing 2010? Generally speaking it depreciates the fastest and I wouldn't place too much value on it after 5 years. I'd place more emphasis on functional additions like factory fitted Xenon / HID, leather seats, upgraded lumbar support etc. Stuff that actually makes the car more enjoyable / comfortable to drive.

Have a look for same year car as yours on all the car sites, try get a similar comparison with sat nav, see if there is anything to it. I'd want cruise control if I was upgrading to something with navigation, have a look into adding cruise control if you don't have it

Realistically you'll never add enough to make a profit. The most you could hope for is it makes the car more appealing to buy than the next. If you're adding things to a car for the next owner, you're gonna have a bad time.

You can get if fitted for about €900 to €1k. I was debating updating mine from the business nav to wide screen pro nav too but decided it wasn't worth it as it already has the business nav and I generally only keep cars for 2 or 3 years so could not see myself getting any value from it. My own car has the sports auto box with the paddle shifters on the steering wheel and adaptive xenon lights which would be desirable enough anyway.

However on a car with the base spec then the pro nav widescreen would be a bonus and make is more desirable than all the other standard ones out there for sale. You will not get all your money back but you might get half it or so and it might sell faster. As the car gets older these extras had little or no extra to it's monetary value.

Yeah I am not doing this for the next owner nor to make a profit. I am trying to gauge how much value you (the posters on this forum) would put on two identical cars with this being the only difference. I believe it's a 3k option from factory but can't check the car configuration as I am on my mobile.

I'm aware if the car is 15 years old with 200k on the clock it makes very little difference. say a 6 year old car with 70k on the clock.

I'm guessing about 500 euro top. I don't even like the idea of nav but the music library appeals. Also, the small screen looks like it is too small for the dash as bm just put blanking plates either side.

    Thanks

You will probably get a few extra quid for it when selling but you really need to decide if you will get value from it. If you value the capacity to store music on the hdd and the other features then go for it.

I have the standard screen in mine and to be honest unless your coming from a car with the wide screen then the standard screen is fine for me. I store most of my music that I listen to on a large capacity memory stick via the usb port in the arm rest which suits me fine.

I think for a VRT valuation extras are depreciated over four years.

That might be a useful rule of thumb.

Very little is the answer. It would sway me to have it, but I wouldn't pay more than say €250-€300 if comapring one with the other....and i like my gadgets.

+1 with Sat Nav I'd be concerned about how much updates cost - do you have to pay a BMW dealer to update the maps or can you buy it on an SD card and do the update yourself? If dealer only - how much per update?

That's what I'd be asking if you were selling it to me, it might just put me off if the feature was there but too expensive to maintain.

It will make the car more desireable come sale time, possibly add €500 or near asking price compared to a poverty spec similar model.

Imo, the widescreen system in a 5 series is a major benefit. I would actually struggle to consider one without it. Given that they are mostly in the more expensive models, I think you would get a hell of alot of the cost back if selling on a 4 or 5 year old 5 serIes.

I upgraded to the 2015 maps on mine a few months back and it works perfectly.

The files are widely available to download for free but you need to buy the code that needs to be entered on the iDrive before it will install the new maps. The code is generated based on your sat nav model, map version you are installing and your car's VIN, the code can be bought online for around €50 and will only work for one upgrade. Map install takes about just over an hour or so.

Most of the guys that upgrade the system for you will install the latest maps as part of the price.

That upgraded sat nav and screen may make the car easier to sell but it wont increase the value beyond the cost.

    Don't bother.

I'd mostly agree. You may be able to ask a little more, but in reality it's just going to make it an easier sell when that time comes. If you want it, then go for it, you may get a couple of hundred extra when selling. But if it is purely for more money when selling then I would leave it.

The wording of my original post may have been misleading.

In no way do I believe that this will make me money, but just trying to guage what level of importance people would put on such a system when purchasing a 2nd hand 5 series. I have upgraded sound systems in previous cars that I knew I would get zero return on, as the stock head unit was still used to keep OEM look, with only difference being in sound quality. No extra features as such.

Some people value Xenons and lumber support more as mentioned above by one poster, some would not buy the 5 series without the wider screen also.

Interesting to see the different opinons. For me, I would not tick the box buying new, not that I would buy a new 5 series anyway. However, if I was looking for a 2nd hand one I would put a few hundred euros value on it. Just trying to see if my opinion is shared.

I also am aware that this system will look outdated in a few years anyway when the next version is realeased whenever that may be. Already the NBT version is out with touch pad control on the idrive controller.

Still seems like a lot of money to spend on a car that is not essential. (€899)

The aluminium inlay on the dash for an RS6 Avant is a 1450GBP extra. Entertainment pack is 2020GBP. Parking pack is 810GBP for the basic one. Bang & Olufsen Sound System is 6300GBP.

The dynamic package (Suspension uprating etc) is 11,500GBP extra. Ceramic brakes are 9375GBP.

I know which extras I'd rather have and certainly the latter would increase the value of the car a lot more.

I'd imagine most RS6 owners buy two aluminium inlays just in case one gets dirty. Makes sense to me!

This is what I was looking for when I was shopping for a used F10:

Adaptive Xenons with high beam assist,
    Heated seats,
    Sports automatic transmission,
Sat Nav wasn't a deal breaker as portable units are cheap these days. (Pro Wide screen would have been a nice bonus though but again not essential.

It was hard enough to find one with all or most of them, anything high spec tended to sell quickly. But I remember seeing one at Morrison's in Cahir and it was very high spec - an SE but had all of the above plus advanced climate control, upgrade 19" wheels, de-chromed exterior, sport seats with memory, HUD, parking assist, adaptive cruise control with lane departure warning, etc. They were looking crazy money for it though.

I bought an f10 a year ago and the pro nav was one of my deal breaker options as I didn't want one without it. Normal screen looks crap and cheap on such a car, way too small and the gadgets that come with pro nav are great I use them all the time.

But when pricing the cars at all the main dublin dealers this type of extra made no difference to the price at all, though I would've paid more. Just makes the car sell faster IMO.
