Im a huge fan of his, and his articles on the water charges and Irish Water are fantastic. But he hasn't been in the paper in perhaps 3 weeks now.
Im wondering if with a new editor, their owner has decided its time to get rid of Gene and his anti-water charge message, especially as said owner happens to be profiting from the installation of water meters.
    Anyone know the story?

I think even people like Gene Kerrigan are allowed to take a few weeks off now and then.

It was a genuine question, no need for the smartarse answer.

He's been replaced with a simple piece of software that replaces the name of politicians based on who is in power. The lad has been firing out the same jaded old anti-establishment nonsense for over 20 years now. He just changes a few lines, a few names and a few details and hits submit. Huge chip on his shoulder as his far-left socialist worldview continues to be rejected. He isn't afraid to take his artist tax break either on his detective novels.

Read to the bottom of this article from Last Sunday's Indo to find the following sentence.

    "Gene Kerrigan is on leave"

Whether of the gardening variety or not, was not specified.
