You'll be the one driving it, but probably the A4 as I find the 3 feels a bit small.
I quite like the Accord too.

    None of the above.

What about one of these, should be able to pick an example like below within budget as long as you don't need the rear middle seat:

What would you expect that to go for Bazz ?

I'd say that will be going for strong money. It's a fairly decent spec, 170bhp and DSG are rare and has low mileage. I'd say they will be asking around €14k for it, possibly a bit more.

    Accord all day every day

Stay away from the bmw. Timing chain will snap and fixing it will empty your wallet.

All second hand cars bring some kind of risk.

Best of luck finding a genuine 6 year old diesel of any of those with only 50k miles on them. Never understand the obsession that people put on low mileage as an indication of condition.

Accord would probably be the most reliable of that lot but not a huge gap, the 2.2d engine is not the most economical or quickest though.

what would be the most economical of all of the above?.... i heard that accords are not that economical

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 51,479 ✭✭✭✭bazz26

From having owned both a 3 Series and Passat CC diesel, fuel economy is very similar. A4 uses the same engines as the Passat CC too.

True people dont buy diesels to do low mileage.
You could look at it another way, why hasnt the car got higher mileage, what was wrong with it.

What about something a little different a Seat Exeo. Its basically an Audi A4 with a slightly different front and back and a different interior. Its the interior out of the Audi A4 open top. Its quite nice too. You should be able to get it with a 1.9tdi or 2.0 tdi engine. You might get a younger one of it than any of the cars you have mentioned and maybe with less mileage on it too.

    Live long and Prosper

    Peace and long life.

They never fitted the 1.9 TDi to the Exeo.

I have a similar price range but willing to strecth it to 17k. Would you consider the golf GTD? That passat CC could be an option for myself too but not too sure if I like the rear end of it. Interior looks very good though.

Actually it would be hard to get a good, well maintained/cared ( no scratches etc) GTD for 17k. They hold value very well.

You're hardly suggesting low mileage diesels are that way because they were broken down for so long?

So I have been discovery in my quest to find one! Lovely looking car. Very reluctant to go looking for something else. What spec do you have?

Ya been keeping an eye on the UK market as well but sterling is a killer atm. With the money they are going for I was also looking to get the heated tartan seats. Might as well pay few quid extra for that. Couldnt get the leather over that lovely cloth patern though. Going to remain patient for now and see if something turns up.

Yeah I wish it was 2009 again. Saved €4500 on that Match model all because the sterling was nearly equal to euro. ( It was demo car. Fully loaded just no leather)

In terms of new car sales, about 57 per cent of the cars sold in 2009 were diesel-powered. This has increased each year since and in 2012 a considerable 74.2 per cent of all new cars sold in Ireland were powered by diesel.

People are buying Diesel because of an obsession with Motor Tax, CO2 and advertised MPG. This means the old argument of questioning the validity of Diesel cars with low/lowish mileage for the year isn't as valid any more IMO.
Now this isn't to say there are no dodgy donedeals out there.....

Valid point . but the op here is looking for an A4/Passat size car so a fairly big diesel which in my experience are bought to do the miles. There are a lot of smaller diesels out there , 1.4/1.2/1.6 vw, seats, toyotas which are more likely to be doing the low mileage over a 2.0/2.2ltr.
I went looking myself lately for a 2.0 vw/audi around 10 years old with under 100k miles done. The closest was a 07 mondeo with 85k miles.
    I bought a 09 A4 with 130k miles.

How is the Audi going for you? Thinking about getting a 08-10 one. Lots available at the moment but between the high mileage and different specs not sure what I should be looking for.

So far so good. Only a couple of thousand miles done but no problems.
09 with 130k miles 120hp. LE spec which is a basic spec.
Car has high mileage but i know the car since new.

A few things i found out are , make sure to get the b8 model, 08 onwards(common rail) , they (im told) never had the oil pump problems the older cars had. They will have injector problems but seem to be more common to the 170bhps, injectors are 350 a piece.
Dual mass flywheel will go at between 100k to 150k miles.
1st /2nd gear driving was what did most of the damage to them. 1200 minimum for clutch / flywheel.
Im told the electric handbrake can cause bother but the audis were better than the passats in that regard.

Spec wise they are hard to call. A lot of basic cars were specced up with extras so had similar specs to higher specced cars.
S line is the spec most want but personally i wouldnt be too pushed. S line is 2 inches lower to ground, harder suspension on 18 inch alloys. i would imagine the ride wouldnt be as comfortable .
Though i would like the led lights and extra trim for the body.

In the end a service history would be very important , that the car was getting the attention it needed, oil and filter and fuel filter changes .

    Hope that helps a bit
