How can I fix this in Lightroom?

Ok, I think where I went wrong was the f stop was way too high. Is there anyway I can fix this in lightroom? I want to bring up the exposure in all the photo and bring down the exposure of the sun. Unfortunately though the adjustment brush does a horrible job on the sun :(

I mean, I did want a blue sky with a twinkling sun effect but this is just overkill.

Is it a case of say I just want lesser "rays" coming out of the sun then I need a smaller f-number?

    f22
    iso 200
    1/500 sec
    18mm

    Anyone have any ideas?

    Thanks in advance!

    Is it shot in RAW?

Up the exposure of the entire image, and then use a graduated filter from the top down to take the exposure down in that area. Should work well, provided you have the image in RAW.

You really need to straighten that horizon :-p

I don't know much about light room but my first guess is that what your trying to achieve is best tried on RAW format. If it was me I would try using layers in Photoshop. The background layer would be of the pic as it is then edit the image in a new instance so that the rest of the picture is brought in to play, then add that edited version as a layer on top of the original and remove however much you need of the top layer to let the detail of the one underneath come through.

Someone else will no doubt correct me but that's my thoughts on it. It looks like an impressive scene, best of luck!

Ya it's shot in RAW but the center of the sun is so blown out it refuses to budge from blinding white, though your suggestion has helped massively so thank you.

So blinded by the sun I couldn't even see it! :D -8 degrees really loses you a lot of your photo though and the perspective as a result :(

Ugh, I think this one might be for the bin

I have 8 photos from this session that I'm kind of happy with but would like some feedback. Should I start a seperate C&C thread or just tack em on here?

Snow scenes are tricky for the light meters in your camera. The snow is so white it tries to expose it as grey so under exposes the image. The sun in the frame will also make things difficult for auto exposure. Surprised it came out as well as it did.

Having shot in RAW you should be OK. PM sent.

In Lightroom, turn down the highlights, turn up the shadows and turn up the whites. After that its finding a balance that suit you.

wanna share the raw so we can all have a go and have a challenge to see who can come up with the best result? :p

Sounds like a plan. I'll put it up on dropbox tonight so :D

Raw? Raw? Back in my day you got a manual exposure camera and a hammer for retouching.

    7F5iw5v.jpg

I cheated by using Photoshop instead though, and I blatantly healed out some of the more egregious lens flare.

    EDIT:

    8.3mb for a raw file?

    Unusual!

can I ask, why do you want the sun in the photo? Why not crop?

I was going for the classic/cheesy white ski slope, peaky mountains, blue sky and twinkling sun effect. As it was midweek and therefor full of tourists there was noone there to ski past me at a good speed and kick up a load of snow in the process, that really would've capped it all off. Unfortunately, pictures of people doing pizza/french fries is terribly boring :(

    Unusual big or unusual small?

I'm guessing he means small. It depends on the camera but RAW files might on average fall in the 15-25Mb range.

Did you completely replace the sun?

  • Moderators, Arts Moderators Posts: 10,520 Mod ✭✭✭✭5uspect

To simply answer your question you need to bump up the shadows while maintaining acceptable highlights. This is where we used to use curves before perimetric sliders came into fashion. I don't use LightRoom but here is the result from Camera Raw, which should be more or less the same.

    And the raw file xml.
