non penetrating mount for freesat/uhf on flat roof

I'm halfway through a house build in dublin 13 at the moment.

I've always planned to install a freesat dish and saorview UHF antennae as part of this process.

However, we don't have many good locations for a dish/antennae (hipped roof with no gables, no chimney, deep soffits [600mm] and EWI planned for the walls).

We do have a large flat roof with line of sight to the South and East.

So, I was thinking that perhaps a non penetrating ground mounts on the flat roof extension would make sense.

What do you guys think? Would this be OK?

If it would be OK, what size mount/post would I need, could i mount both dish and antennae on a single mount and heavy would the whole setup be (so I can ensure the roof can take the weight)?

    Thanks for your help,

    Slip

oops ... one more thing (i guess this is a terestrial question but in case you guys know).

our neighbors roof is blocking line of sight to 3rock from the house unless we go up quite high.

would the signal be strong enough to get away with this or would there be a simple way to check?

    thanks again,

    slip

another option for our dish is to use an upside down ground mount from the soffit (which could be reinforced for this).

can any experts out there offer some advice!

wouldn't something like this http://www.tradeworks.tv/acatalog/2-Non-Penetrating-Roof-Mount.html work?

make sure you have a sheet of rubber so the corners don't dig into the roof?

thats a good point. the flat roof is fibreglass so perhaps it would need protection from anything which could damage it.

unfortunately, our neighbor is blocking line of sight to three rock on the flatroof. would a uhf antenna be likely to work regardless of this?

also, a soffit mount would look better (as it would not be as visible). would this be an option (if well supported by screwing into joists etc.)?

Can you not place the aerial in your attic?

That's where I've put mine, no need to worry about waterproofing the connections, wind moving the aerial, and of course, maintenance is easier.
I used something like this. And it's perfect.

You should avoid any blocking from your neighbors too.

it is a dormer bungalow so there isn't much attic space except a little bit over the eaves.

do you have trouble getting reception with an attic aerial?

There are so many variables it is not possible to predict how well an attic aerial will work in a particular case.

Dishes, on the other hand, don't normally need to go on the roof. You only need line of site to the satellite which has an elevation angle of around 25˚ or so. Mount it on a south to east facing wall, in general the lower practicable the better, as it will make maintenance easier. Also it will be less subject to windy weather.

i'd rather not install an external aerial if it turns out one in the attic/over eaves space would have been ok.

what would be the simplest (and cheapest!) way to check if i would get decent saorview reception with a ufh aerial in a few different locations (given that the house is a building site at present)?

Call in a local aerial installer.

I find non-penetrating mounts very disappointing. Wrong forum? :)
