VW Golf TSI MKIV Horn not sounding

    Hi all,

hoping there's some VW enthusiasts that can help me out here.

I left my Golf TSI 08 122BHP in to get it's timing chain replaced in September and ever since I've got it back the horn no longer sounds when the steering wheel is pressed, I know I should of brought it back to VW straight away but I dont drive that car much and I put it down to a fuse without checking.

Now a few months down the line and VW will not accept fault and are claiming the Steering control module needs to be replaced at a cost of 500 euro, they claim that they would never have gone near the steering column when replacing a timing chain but I can say for a fact that I called in when the work was being done and the housing around the steering column was out and ever since the timing chain replacement there is a squeeking of plastic when the steering wheel is turned like they didnt fit it back in properly.

So I'm comfortable enough around electronics being an engineer, but not too familiar with VW problems and issues, I'm kind of hoping somebody here will be familiar enough to lead me in the right direction as far as troubleshooting goes as I do not believe that the control unit is broken as i'm not getting any airbag light on the dash, and I'm not willing to give them 500 euro to replace something that they have caused and it may not be broken.

    Notes :

I've checked the fuse and its okay

How do I test the relay?

The horn is located behind the fog light, is it possible to get at this without removing the front bumper?

There's a cable that plugs into the control unit, it may be the case that they have forgot to plug this back in, could this be the cause and can I get at this without removing the steering wheel?

I've read that it may also be the clock spring, any body have experience with this?

    Thanks in advance

Does the bumper need to come off when doing the timing chain on these ? Not sure if it does but the horn could have been disconnected and not reconnected.

When you press the horn can you hear a clicking behind/under the dash?

No we can't hear anything clicking under the dash or bonnet

Doesn't mean the relay isn't working but normally you might hear a clicking, surely you can pop out the foglight surround and have al ook in at the horn connection to see it ? i'd start there anyway but having said that i'd doubt if the bumper was removed by VW.

What kind of diagnosis did VW do on it to come to the conclusion it needed a new steering column ?

I would seek a second opinion from a trusted indy.

Agreed that's the place to start, the housing for the fog light appeared to be attached to the front bumper thou, I better have another look, I believe it was just a visual inspection, am I wrong in thinking the airbag light should come on if there's a problem with the weel?

If ther was a problem with the slip ring on the steering wheel itself maybe but im no expert. There must be access to be able to change the fog light bulbs, normally the surround pops out and then the foglight is able to be removed after undoing a few scress or torx.
