Setting up Vodafone mobile broadband on Linux/Ubuntu

I'm trying to help someone (who is entirely non-technical) set up their mobile broadband on a laptop.

Turns out their system is Linux/Ubuntu.

Does anyone here have any experience of installing Vodafone mobile broadband on such a system?

Vodafone.ie say they do not support that platform, so all leads/tips greatly appreciated.

If they're not technical why are they running Linux?

They could be using a reeeeeeal old machine that can't handle or is not licensed for Win Vista/7/8 but can take a lightweight Linux dist.

I've got a 12 year old dell laptop with an old dist of Ubuntu on it and it still works(ish) :p

Anyhoo, I don't think the OP's friend is going to get any joy out of Vodafone on the software install however. :(

Because someone more technically-minded talked them into it. And who knows, maybe it was free?

I'll keep trying, until I reach the stage when I feel like rebooting the laptop, into a skip.

Is networkmanager not recognising the dongle? Google the dongle name (Huawei/Alcatel) and model number and Ubuntu, see if others have tried to get it working.

As I remember back in the day you had to use usb-modeswitch to get networkmanager to recognise some dongles that had micro SD readers built in. That might have changed since though.

Alternatively buy her a MiFi, less hassle.

It depends on the 3G modem. Does the Linux kernel support it? Try the lsusb command in a terminal window. Is that device supported in the kernel your friend runs?
