    Hi everyone,

Just wondering is anyone else in the same boat as me with a long commute to work? I know garda and firefighters who do this regularly.

    Is it sustainable?

    What's your story?

    Just interested to know :)

I think the point is that they work odd hours and can be redeployed to different workplaces at short notice.

in that case isn't there a emergency services forum where an answer might be more likely?

Which emergency service redeploys people to different workplaces at short notice?

Locum ambulance staff working for the HSE can be deployed over large areas. Someone posted last year that he was living in Midleton and was being sent to Bantry (106km) for 2-3 weeks. Gardaí and soldiers can expect to be moved a few times in their careers and have short-term deployments quite a few times, with notice depending on the exigencies of the service.

Fire brigade staff can expect to be moved within their service area to cover holidays, illness, etc. - many stations are small and don't always have spare personnel to cover the technical positions - duty officers, mechanics, advanced paramedic, etc.
