Hi i am looking for peoples opinion on sycamore for use as a firewood. I have read that it can be hard to split but can be quick to season. Do many on here burn it or have any info? Thanks

splits easily, drys quickly, burns well but can spark a lot.

can be a hoor to split green anyway, have never done it dry.

Auld lad had four old sycamores that were becoming a concern by the roadside felled this winter.

Some rounds split alright. others you'd just bounce off em. found the maul worked best, but even at that you would hop it off a few times to get a crack started.

These were ditch trees that had probably been cut back hard at some point in their early growth before growing back into a single stem. up to 2.5 foot across.

Sycamore is pretty decent firewood. Not as good as ash, oak or beech but still pretty good. I find it doesn't spark at all when it's seasoned. We're happy to burn it on the open fire here, without a spark guard.

I find it pretty east to split when it's green. The rounds from areas where branches joining the trunk etc can be a bit more difficult but no real problem.
