Just wondering if anyone has any experience of the SIMI in resolving issues with their member garages or are they just a powerless group?

Chocolate teapot; also as they're owned by their members there is little reason for them to want to find anything wrong with them. Assuming SIMI will protect you is extremely foolish, assuming its of no use is more accurate.

Moved to the Motors forum, as I believe you'll get better answers there.

S.I.M.I. are nothing more than a country club for dealer members. They are a lobby ground with certain agendas and vested interests.

They have no interest in mediating between customers and their members and will rarely rule against one of their own. They add no value to a buying customer.

Agree 100%. Sister had an issue with an Simi garage. Their objective was 100% to protect the garage.

Simi are to garages what Sinn Fein are to the IRA.

I don't recall ever seeing a story in the media where SIMI backed up a customer in any dispute with any of their members.

The SIMI was set up to instigate a level of standards and practices within the motor industry. Since then it has evolved to being a lobby group for the motor dealers. The SIMI were primarily responsable for the recent new number plate system, the advantage to the dealers being it split sales between the begining and middle of the year. They also had a hand in changing the NCT regulations recently meaning a car has a valid 12 month cert from date of testing, not just until it's date of registration.
So as you see their main priority is the dealers and getting legislation passed that benifits them. Ifmyou have an issue with a garage you'd be better off looking into the consumer ombudsman.
