I was doing at max 103 in a 100 zone earlier this week and a garda speed van flashed literally just as I passed it. What does this mean? It was during the day!

It means you'll probably get a letter in the post next week asking for a contribution of €80.00 in exchange for up to 4 penalty points.

Maybe but I thought that since it only flashed literally as I passed the van that maybe it was the car behind me it was getting?

A car speedo will over read by a bit, if you were doing an indicated 103, the gun probabaly read less than 100

I flashed one of them back...

....and the bastards called it indecent exposure. INJUSTICE!

    It means nothing.

You won't get a ticket for 3 over.

If you were doing more than that, then you should have something within a fortnight

Most speedos in cars overread . At 70mph on the dash you are only doing 66/67. it will vary as well with new/worn tyres. 68mph on new tyres. 66 on bald tyres. This is what i have found myself.
On england i know it is illegal for car manufacturers to sell cars that underread so they do the opposite and over read by a few percent.
If you use the GPS speed function on your sat nav this is normally confirmed.

In the end you should be fine,
