I am hoping to make a purchase from a supplier in Ukraine but he wants to be paid by Western Union as apparently Paypal do not operate in Ukraine. I am reasonably confident about the seller but I am not sure how secure I would be in paying by WU, do I have any cover or protection at all?

I would not pay using Western Union . Too risky . What is product and who is it being purchased from.

Paying by WU is similar to paying cash, you have no comeback at all!

Yes, that's what I figured. The guy selling is a skilled craftworker and posts on a site where he is looking for the regulars (who are pretty straightforward) to purchase from him, in a smallish close community of interest. So if he messed about he would lose customers pretty fast as word would go round. Still, nothing is 100% reliable and Ukraine really isn't the kind of place you could chase an order from. Its a good bit more expensive for much the same thing from the UK, but i have recommendations from there and it would be safer.

Whenever someone asks for WU payment walk away. It is not an online payment service, more for transferring money to someone you know (e.g. friend or relative travelling who loses their bank cards)

There are exceptions to this otherwise safe rule, the OP's situation would be one of them.
