Selling car to dismantlers

I have an 02 Polo that failed the NCT.
I have approached a few dismantlers and one seems very eager and wants to come out tonight to view it. He wouldn't discuss price until he sees it.
I have called around the others and i know what i can get elsewhere, so I won't be budged lower than that.

I have never sold a car before (either regular or for scrap).

Apart from getting him to sign the log book, and me posting it back to Shannon (and getting the money in cash obviously), is there anything that i need to do or be wary about?

Do i need to worry about an end-of-life cert if i am selling it to him?

I would be surprised if you get more than a hundred euro for it.
As regards the logbook, get him to sign it and send it off.
That will be the end of your involvement with the car.

    Thanks.
I have already had a few offers significantly greater than €100.

What's wrong with it exactly? Might be worth the repair.

    This too shall pass.

There is some sort of sensor gone relating to the control of the air bags.
We had it with a garage over a period of months while he tried to source the part second hand. He even got a part in from Lithuania, but it didn't work.
The part, new, would be €500, plus the cost of fitting it.
In addition, the car is no longer sealed, so on cold nights, it is full of condensation and on really cold nights the inside of the windscreen freezes. The back seat is constantly damp.

I guess it could be repaired, but somebody would have to buy the part new, and given the general condition, i don't think it would be worth spending that kind of money on it.

Having said that, the rest of the mechanical parts seem to be in good order and two new tyres went on it in November, so if somebody knows what they are doing, there should be some decent parts to be gotten from it.

If the breaker tells me that is going to scrap it, do i need to get him to give me an end-of-life cert? If so, is that something that he can give there and then or do i have to wait until he has it physically scrapped?

Absolutely, an authorised facility is required to issue one by law when you leave the car there. If it's not an authorised facility make sure you do the change of ownership process (both parties sign logbook and send it to Shannon yourself) otherwise the car remains registered in your name.

    http://www.environ.ie/en/Environment/Waste/ProducerResponsibilityObligations/EndOfLifeVehicles/#Authorised Treatment Centre Obligations
On the deposit of an end-of-life vehicle at an authorised treatment facility for appropriate treatment and recovery, the owner or operator of that facility shall
-issue a Certificate of Destruction to the registered owner, an authorised person of a local authority or a member of An Garda Síochána and
-all relevant information relating to that certificate of destruction shall be noted on the National Vehicle File.
-impose no charge on the registered owner of the end-of-life vehicle in respect of the Certificate of Destruction.

U can bring a lot of dodgy heads out to your place for the sake of a few quid extra. They,ll have a good nosey to see if worthwhile coming back especially if u say call after 6 or Saturday etc.

I made a deal with a dismantlers, and he is coming to collect it tomorrow morning.
He said that he will give me a Certificate of Destruction, send a second copy of it to Shannon and keep a copy for himself.
He also said that he will need to take the log book.

Is this all as you would expect? I asked if i could send the copy to Shannon, but he said that he is responsible for it, so he has to send it to Shannon. As i will have a copy, i think that it should be OK. Is this reasonable?

Will i be able to call Shannon in a few weeks time and ask them to confirm that they have scrapped it?

Ya, that's exactly how it works, you'll get the customer copy, he keeps the facility copy and he sends the other copy to Shannon. his waste permit number will be on it and the CoD serial number will also be on it.
You can ring Shannon and confirm that th car has been scrapped, it usually takes 2 to 4 weeks for it to go through.

Not sure how scrappage works but any time I sold a car it was up to me to send the log book off. Otherwaise you have no way of knowing he actually sent it. Next thing you know the car is back on the road crossing the M50 Toll and geting caught on speed cameras all over the country and the fines and points get sent to you. So if it were me I would definitely NOT give him the log book. I'd also check the validity of the cert he gives you.

You both sign the form and YOU send it back.

scrap-man already told you how it goes. You get the customer copy (clue in the name there) he gets the Facility copy and he sends the other copy to Shannon. I'd say he will walk away if you try to hang on to the logbook

As long as the COD is an actual COD, and not a scribble on the back of envelope.
