Friend of mine bought this exact one before Xmas , I bought the 55' non curved one.

Absolute belter of a TV, picture and sound quality is immense and it's a steal at that price. Think my friend payed €1800 for his one.

Some interesting thoughts on curved tvs here. Most important for the op is that the reviewers found at 55" the e effects of the curve were minimal. You would need to go up 10" to start seeing the advantages

D.I.D also have a curved 55" Samsung for same price as iBood.

I have read from other posts that iBood can be a disaster for delivery times etc.

Peace of mind buying in a shop if anything goes wrong and also supports an Irish shop!!

The only thing is the model is slightly different in D.I.D (maybe older) but couldn't imagine it would be drastically different.

Check the D.I.D website under TV's. Very easy to find

Wont let me post a link properly as I am a newbie (signed up just for this post)

Note the shipping date is early March which is very far away.

The DID TV isn't 4k, it's 1080p. World of difference.

my only warning was that iBood don't have a good rep for delivery

Is there much 4k content out there? I was also of the impression that the benefits don't really become apparent until about 65"

More importantly, doesn't it use a monster amount of GB to stream a movie?

Thin you are looking at about 15gb per hour streaming 4k and that's musing Netflix's compression.

That's not 4K. Really wish retailers would stop blending the two (UHD and 4K) together.

If you can get a non curved edition at the same price or less I'd go for that instead. Also, unless you're in real need for a new TV I'd hold off for OLED, even if the wait is 2 or 3 years it'd be worth it for basically the MVP of display technology.

    Taken from techradar

""Technically, "Ultra High Definition" is actually a derivation of the 4K digital cinema standard. However while your local multiplex shows images in native 4096 x 2160 4K resolution, the new Ultra HD consumer format has a slightly lower resolution of 3840 X 2160.""

    Then wiki has this gem

""Two resolutions are defined as UHDTV:

4K UHDTV (2160p) is 3840 pixels wide by 2160 pixels tall (8.29 megapixels), which is four times as many pixels as 1920x1080 (2.07 megapixels).
8K UHDTV (4320p) is 7680 pixels wide by 4320 pixels tall (33.18 megapixels), which is sixteen times as many pixels as current 1080p HDTV, which brings it closer to the detail level of 15/70 mm IMAX. NHK advocates the 8K UHDTV format with 22.2 surround sound as Super Hi-Vision.555
The suffix "p" in 2160p and 4320p stands for progressive scan or non-interlace""

I had a curved tv in the 1990s. Then the man in the shop told me that flat screens were better. Now I don't know what to believe anymore

That seems very high for h.265, I'd expect closer to half that.

There isn't much 4k content out there yet, but there is some (House of Cards, Breaking Bad, presumably Better Call Saul on Netflix, 4K YouTube).
I've certainly noticed the improvement (I bought a 50 inch 4k Samsung in November), compared with my previous full HD TV (an LG, which served me very well), when watching 4k content.

I suppose my point really though was that 4k vs 1080p, regardless of content, is still quite different. Sure, the maximum speed limit here is 120km/h, but I don't think many people look at prospective cars and rule out more expensive models on the basis of "sure, they all have to stay below 120km/h anyway".

Perhaps the best example actually would be thinking about using the TV with a computer/laptop. I have a desktop hooked up the TV, so when I'm using that, the productivity gains from a UHD screen are absolutely massive (fitting a full browser window and a full word document side by side etc, or more poker tables for people who play poker etc.). Higher pixel count offers much more than just a crisper image on native resolution content.

there's next to no 4k content available and even if u have sky HD its only 720p

Sammy showed off their insane SUHD tv at CES recently, if your willing to invest in this end of the market, ya might as well wait for their newer model :)

Well, they're releasing them much sooner than they had intended (originally slated for next year, BT being competitive in the UK scuppered that idea). There's a definite lack of available UHD content worthy of justifying a "4k" set at the moment and in the short-term, hopefully this'll spur on adoption from providers so that regular consumers can benefit.

    Yes I agree.
There was a story just last week that Sky are fast forwarding their launch because I think it's Virgin are launching their 4k service.
Supposed be within next few months

Ha! Good old Sky, only rushing to put out up to date tech when a competitor is on the other side trying to do it as well.

So is this 4K thing gonna be a fad like 3D, or a proper jump forward like 1080p?

Stay away from 4k for at least another 2 years. Have some channels gone even hd yet? Its all marketing crap. Pick yourself a good led TV...

How would a higher resolution be a fad?

How would a higher resolution be a fad?

It would be a fad if manufacturers made these tvs and then tv stations never produced 4k content.

Sky's 4K boxes are likely to be streaming devices, similar to a Roku.

4K TV via a satellite dish/box is years away.

Sky recently came out and said the contrary. That their new 4k boxes would continue to be delivered over Satellite. They are moving recordings to the cloud though (presumably to cut down on the cost of very large boxes).

It's possible the boxes will also stream content over wifi similar to on demand / evision

For the regular TV user 4K is in no way practical. You don't sit close enough to the TV to notice. This is a very different proposition to computer users or content producers sitting closer to their screens and being able to work with full HD resolutions within a 4K screen.

A lot of cheaper 4KTVs are sacrificing other specs to cram in the 4K panel. Things like black levels, movement fluidity etc will always been central to the TV experience. I recently purchased a high quality Samsung 1080p screen and I'm way more impressed than some of the 4KTVs I've seen in shops here.

You make a good point, one of the interesting things to come out of CES 2015 was not about 4K but HDR.Most people wouldn't be able to spot the difference between a 1080P and 4K picture unless they had the eyes of a hawk but HDR looks very interesting and is instantly noticable.Along with OLED ,there are interesting things happening in the TV world but it probably would be a good idea to wait a while for the dust to settle to see what works well and what doesn't
