There has been dismay and anger among residents and businesses in Cork City as it became know recently that Eircom had decided to renege on its 2007 promise to rollout fixed line broadband in the city.

For PR reasons Eircom will continue with the line that it has "no plans" to rollout broadband but that this could change in the future if the company is renationalised

Eircom's  position seems to be  that the provision of fixed line broadband is not commercially viable throughout Irelands second city and  as they no longer have any public service obligations that residents in affected areas should instead look to mobile dongles.

Eircom is also of course aware that the claim on its website that broadband in available throughout the city is false but has refused repeated requests throughout the years to  remove this deliberate lie.
