Just gonna bump this to save starting a new thread.

Car failed the other day on emissions, brake hoses, and 2 front tyres. The mechanic has done the hoses and reckon he's done all he can to sort the emissions. I still reckon it's a bit smokey though, and I'm doubtful if she'll pass.
So I reckon my best bet is to put her through as is, and if she passes the emissions, throw 2 tyres on her afterwards for a visual? It'd sicken me to put the tyres on and then she fails on emissions again.

    Good idea?

Petrol or diesel? What are the readings? Without that information I might as well say "crack an egg in the sump, put some porridge in the rad and some sawdust in the gearbox and she'll fly through!"

Cheers for all the replies lads.

She's an Astra diesel. Tisn't advice on how to reduce the emissions I'm after. I'm just wondering is a tyres fail just a visual retest?

Yes. If you retest on tires, bloke comes out, has a quick gander and goes "yep, that's grand".
    One word of caution:
If you do fail on front tires, they will also check the rear, to make sure you didn't just witch them round. :)

PS: Good luck with the test

    Good stuff doc.

No fear of switching them around. I'll get proper yokes if she gets through everything else. Just don't want to be dropping up to €150 on tyres before I know everything else is spot on.
