It's a tradition in parts of India to use henna, a type of natural hair dye, to cover up grey hairs.

Henna? Though you get redheads among some middle eastern folks. I knew two Jewish lads who were redheads and we're talking 1960's John Hinde postcard red. Now in fairness they were Irish, but Woody Allen isn't and he is/was a ginge. Native Australians can have the odd redhead(and blonds) though usually only as kids. IIRC there's a big pocket of the ginge in the Urals. And even some African folks can have red hair, but IIRC that's due to some form of albinoism going on? Going back further some Neandertals had the ginge, though it was down to slightly different genes.

Rejoice in the awareness of feeling stupid, for that’s how you end up learning new things. If you’re not aware you’re stupid, you probably are.

Saw a show a few weeks ago, a tribe along the river Nile colour their hair using cow pi$$!!!
Just stick their head under the cow's tail when she mid-flow. Hair goes a blondey/reddy colour. Sure if it keeps them happy, let them at it I suppose!

IIRC a few descriptions in the hadith(stories of early Islam) mentioned his hair as of a reddish hue.

In one case being a ginge changed history. Hernando Cortes, he of the conquistadors had red hair and pale skin and blue eyes. By a fcukin huge coincidence the Aztec main god dude quetzolcoatil(sp) was also described as having red hair, pale skin and blue eyes and even more "you have got to be making this shít up", oul Hernando rocked up in the very year the local priests reckoned old Quetzo was going to return. So they welcomed him and his men in. Result for the Spaniards, not so good for the locals.

EDIT apparently quite the number of far flung cultures who would have had no direct experience with red headed Euro types had legends of pale ginge(and blond) people.

Among Muslim men in India & elsewhere, the henna / ginger thing may signify that they've undertaken the Hajj - beards are often given the touch of rouge too.

Wonder if the OP was watching Guy Martin in India this evening? The redser featured tonight appeared to be a Hindu & a Dalit, so perhaps henna is just the most economical way of covering up the ould bit o' grey.

I was near one of them, went there for 3 weeks for work and it was nearly death by toilet.

I was staying in a good hotel, careful with what I ate and brushed my teeth with bottled water etc and I still got sick apparently the flies are the problem.

Trust me India is the toilet of the world.

The use of henna in Islamic cultures is emphasized as a sunnah (a behaviour, usually learnt from the example of the prophet Muhammad, that is encouraged but not obligatory)

The use of henna in Muslim communities serves as a visible marker to display an individual’s piety & devotion to the tradition.

Ha ha ha. Loads of the Bangladeshis in my work do it.

It's called "mendi" and it's henna. The reason being it's against Islamic jurisprudence to die your hair black or mark your body; for that reason dye, tattoos, piercings in men and some other stuff is "haram" or forbidden. Muhammad says in the hadiths to use henna instead and as such lots of men in the Islamic world do it.

    It looks sh*te though.

I had the genius idea of drinking from a village well in the Chittagong Hill Tracts in Bangladesh. I lost nearly a stone in three days, continuous sh*tting and gawking and waking up in a cold sweat or a fever. I honestly thought I was going to die, I didn't realise if it was day or night half of the time. I had around two brief sips at the time. For a week after I had no appetite. Sitting in grimy, filthy cafes watching people stuff rice into their mouths with dirty fingers as cockroaches scuttled around didn't help matters.
