Extra charge for Self Employed or...

So I've been registered as self employed for the last few years, but fully employed by a company and paying PAYE etc.

I was on to revenue, asking should I cancel my registration as self employed and they said sure I might as well keep it on in case I do work in the future. Fair enough.

Now, I've been somewhat bold (probably) and haven't filled in any tax returns for the last while. My thinking was "well what's a percentage penalty on zero."

Anyway, decided to do all of my outstanding taxes last night. Everything was grand and turns out I was owed some money from the year I re-commenced PAYE work.

But, I filled out last year where I was completely on PAYE. Essentially I just copied over my P60 and ended up owing a considerable amount. Surely I've already paid tax at source for all my earnings. Is there an extra tax cherry on top because I entered it in form 11 or should I be concerned that my employers don't know how to add?

I've since put in a request to cancel my registration as self employed.

No extra tax on top due to form 11, perhaps your employer mis calculated or maybe you entered something wrong.

Ok, thank you. Wasn't sure if there was extra PRSI etc. due because I was identifying as self employed or something.

I suspect there's a 10% surcharge for late filing being applied...?

Yes when you are classed as self employed they stick on the 10% surcharge regardless of whether you had any self employed income or not. Good luck with arguing your case to revenue to get it quashed also they won't give in on it

There's nothing to give in on, if the OP isn't a chargeable person the surcharge doesn't apply. They just need to point that fact out to the Inspector.
