Shock absorber question

    Hi

So my local motor factors is having a sale on shocks and it reminded me that in my last nct my front shock imbalance was 29%, Over 30% is a fail. My four wishbone bushes (2 each side) were knackered.

So i was wondering would the bad bushes cause the high imbalance and that my shocks are ok or would the worn bushes have nothing to do with the imbalance results.

    Thanks

Impossible to say, get the bushes sorted first anyway. Ur car must be a total rattle box driving around with wishbone bushes.

It was a horrible clunky mess but I had them replaced and it passed the re-test and honestly it felt tight as a drum and still does 7 months later.

I'm planning on testing it early and selling it in April hopefully. I just want to spend as little money as possible on it between now and then.

Can you confirm from your opening post that your car passed its last nct with wore wishbone bushes and an imbalance on shocks of 29%?

It failed on the wishbones but the shocks passed.

I was just thinking the shocks may fail this year with the imbalance near fail levels. but maybe it was the worn bushes that caused the high imbalance. the rear shock imbalance was only 3% in comparison

    Thanks :)

Post the actual readings and you'll get a better guess.

Nct shock test is very crude
leaking damage and imbalance between left and right.

Two faulty shocks could pass NCT imbalance test.

You old shocks are probably worn and contribute to high reading

if you suspect them get a mechanic to test or just replace yourself if your able to DIY

You're probably right the replacements are cheap enough and I can replace them myself.
    Thanks

but you said inbalance on shocks of 29% on that test lane, may also be lower/higher in another,i was expecting a fail on my front shocks from high reading on second last test, but dropped to 13% now.
