New Turbo or wattbike

Well it's time to replace the turbo, starting to show signs of use and is making more noise than I do while I'm in the efforts, I have rollers also but it's a fight to get to them before the young lad and more important I'd like a new toy,

I'm thinking of a wattbike or the wahoo kicker, I've wanted to get a wattbike for a while but I'm hearing the wahoo is the way to go, I've used a wattbike good few times and found it good, the saddle was the only thing I did not like about it but its a top class training tool, has any one els use a wahoo trainer ? It's a lot cheaper than the wattbike but not as much info coming back to you as the wattbike but don't think i need all the info the wattbike gives, not sure if I was told right but I can program in my workout and ride...

    Any feedback would be helpful,

    Cheers zip,

Wattbike is as good as you will get in terms of accuracy. Kickr has a very good reputation and you put your own bike on it do you can practice TT position very well for example

You certainly get plenty of data with the WB and it won't diappoint you if that's what you are after. I have both but stick pretty much to the WB - that may be a lot to do with habit though

One downside with the WB - the Pro is the version recommended for fit male cyclists. However it's lowest "gearing" is relatively high. That also means that if you are really focussed on sprint performances it's probably as good as you will get for measuring high end power. The Kickr gives you much more of a "real" bike feel with both your own bike and a standard cassette determining gearing. allowing a lot more when it comes to spinning (as opposed to grinding). Having said that you can get there through a combination of WB and rollers

You can put your own saddle on the WB

Clearly price-wise the WB is quite a bit more expensive (and current exchange rates don't help on that front)

I had a lemond trainer for 3 years and got a wahoo kikr before christmas, im very happy with it. You can link it to trainerroad or lots of apps and it automatically changes resistance according to your interval. If in Erg mode you dont even change gear.
I'm a big fan of riding my own bike on the trainer be it tt or road, with my own position dialled in.
Been on a wattbike a couple of times, feels like a very expensive gym bike to me. I understand they are very accurate, but almost as accurate is good enough.

    Hey,

Thank for the feed back, as much as I like new toys I would like to get something that I will get good use out of and as much as I want the wattbike ill prob end up going for the kickr this time and get a wattbike next year as the young lad move up,

lemond can;t be gotten any more. no more stcok being shipped to europe.

one alternative to the wahoo, elite turbo muin, direct drive like the wahoo, picked one up a few months back and love it. no integrated power, but if you have your own PM it's a ready solution. have a power integrated model as well if you want to do teh VR/ERG mdoes or don't have a pm

Think you can only get the Kickr directly from Wahoo Fitness

Ordered one on Stephens Day, it was despatched on the 29th and it arrived around the 2nd IIRC

I picked up a wahoo in base2race, they had several in stock at the time so maybe worth a call.

Thanks lads for all the info and feed back on the kicker and other ops, I've decided to go with the kickr this year as I think the young lad will use it also more than a wattbike, looking forward to trying it out, any advice on what app is best to set up your session with, I use training peaks can it work with this ? And do wahoo apps let me plan out the efforts in the session or training roads,

    Thanks again,
    Zip.

    Hey,
Got the kickr, just went to set it up tonight,I plugged it in and set up trainningroad and searched for the kickr but could not pick it up, there looks like there is a light on the power box but it did not light up, then I looked at the plug and it looks like there should be a fuse in it but there is not, its a sealed 2pin plug and not sure how you open the metal fuse holder, did any one els have this ? Maybe the fuse was not fitted and came with it but I can't see it,

    Cheers zip,

There is a green light in that transformer box that lights up once plugged in. Don't know about any fuse within the plug itself as it lit up as soon as plugged in with me. You presumably have a euro power adapter - are you sure that is working?

    Thanks for reply,
Could be that the prob it with, when you look at the 2 pins in the bottom of the plug, can you see the end of a fuse in the metal bit with a hole in it ?

Just been back out to the lair to check. There is nothing in that hole. I can out a pin in to the depth of around 15mm. Looks like somewhere for an optional 3rd (neutral?) pin

Looks a bit like this (the plug on the right)

    po111.jpg

The other end of that cable (the bit that plugs into the transformer box) is the same as those you used to see on PCs. You might want to check if you have an old one lying around and try swapping it over

    Hey,

Thanks for taking the time to check that for me, it must be the doggy 2pin to 3pin adapter so the prob is with, think I have an old pc cable alright, might try that, thanks.

    Cheers zip,

    Cheers zip.

Just cut off the 2 pin plug and put on a normal 3 pin plug top. Those adaptors are terrible.
