The lack of availability of RTÉ News Now during the Olympics.

I'm aware that RTÉ News Now is not available on the RTÉ News website outside the island of Ireland during the Olympics (well, the summer Olympics anyway) because the International Olympics Committee (IOC) would not be happy if Olympics highlights shown on RTÉ News bulletins were available unrestricted on the RTÉ News website.

This doesn't affect me because I wouldn't be interested in watching RTÉ News Now if I'm on holiday.

However, I am curious: Why would the IOC be hung-up about a few minutes of Olympic footage?

The rights are extremely lucrative. US networks apart from NBC are only allowed to use press photos of Olympic events in their bulletins.

It's riddiculous. Hits CNBC in particular massively because they are only a rights holder in the US and the various international arms have to be on the look out for anything they have to block - a bit difficult in live programming! As a precaution NBC News programmes are usually dropped from CNBC Europe for the duration.

Meanwhile Sky Sports News can't report properly on the biggest sporting event happening on the globe. In previous years they pretended it wasn't happening, but couldn't really do that for London 2012 and had to do all their reports with just press stills.

It's overkill from the IOC. The rights would be no less lucrative if they allowed highlights of coverage to air on news programmes internationally, it wouldn't hurt their live rights one bit. BBC has the same problem with BBC World News, not being able to air reports from the Olympics using footage, even though the BBC, through the EBU, hold the rights in the UK.

If memory serves me, NBC send a hugely disproportionate number of staff to the Olympics. They don't use the same feeds as RTÉ, the BBC etc. They play a huge role in funding the games.
