With a focus 1.4 costing 570 per year to tax are these petrol cars going to be hard to sell? Or will there always be a market for petrol?

There will always be a market if the price is right, which would be lower than the diesel equivalent in the case of your standard family car.

Guess so, but nearly a grand over 3 years is a lot of maney to pay on tax alone imo,

Guess there will always be a market for petrol, probably myself included,

on the cc system they were E385. Secondly a lot of people will probably siply assume 08 on is cheaper to tax, which is good for you if selling, secondly, realistically what would they be saving by buying another car if they are hell bent on the motor tax, E300 at a push...

Funny how you can tax a 3L petrol 3 series from 08 and on for that price i.e. E570...

All 1.4 litre cars that are registered on the old engine size tax system will cost €385 a year. However cars that are registered on the newer emissions based tax system (generally from 2008 onwards) will be based on the car's C02 rating. In the example of a 1.4 litre Focus then it will be €570 on the newer system. The lower the emissions, the lower the tax. Cars first registered between 1st Jan 2008 and 30 June 2008 had the option of whichever was cheaper. Cars first registered from 1st July 2008 onwards were automatically registered on the newer emissions system. Those cars like the 1.4 Focus and 1.6 Avensis had high emissions hence had higher tax.

You can enter the car's reg here and it will tell you the tax rate:

I'd love to see the Gov lower the tax on some of the higher rated cars (like my FRV which is €630 I think), and increase the ones at the lower end a bit (and I say this also as the owner of a €190 car).

I think with so many people buying lower rate cars since 2008, a balancing out of the system would allow some of us to go for bigger engines cars.
