What's your budget? Cheap can be anything from 1k to 10k. Not being a pri*k

Mk 2 pajero in 2.8 form might fit the bill. Reliable, average fuel consumption for a 4x4 @ approx 22mpg. The pre 98 trooper in 3.1 also a good machine.

2-3k will get op 2 of them possibly 3.

go for a Mk2 pajero, don't be tempted by the 800 euro 1500 euro heaps of crap pay min 2,000 and you will get a good one with no scrapes hasn't been used to move sheep from one field to another,
Something like this http://www.donedeal.ie/commercials-for-sale/94-pajero-commercial/8585550?offset=1 on another note this Mk 1 is really nice http://www.donedeal.ie/commercials-for-sale/mitsubishi-pajero-lifted-33-mud-terrains/8601239?offset=8 I wouldn't worry about the year more the condition and remember if its 1995 back qualifies for classic insurance @ 145 a year cant beat that

It won't get him 2/3 clean ones. 1500 - 2k maybe with change left. 3k won't get a decent mk3 either, hence me recommending the mk2 or trooper.

Those 3.1 Troopers are a very reliable machine, actually the much maligned 3.0 isn't bad either once you uprate the oil system a little.
Not that many good ones around these days though, most have been exported or scrapped.

If i was given a 3.0l trooper for nothing i wouldn't take it, a well refined powerful engine when its running right but a complete disaster when it throws a tantrum.
A very unreliable machine engine wise, every morning is a throw of the dice if its starts or not.

I bought 2 clean mk2s 2.8 no tests and a 2.5 for €1200, i sold one on for export and €250 got the other 2 through a test. If one has a keen eye and knows what they are buying a jeep without a test can be bought very right. Them mk2 pajeros are very simple basic machines.
