Route 59 (Killiney - Dún Laoghaire) totally confused!

    Hi all,

We usually get the DART to Killiney and walk to Dalkey via the Vico and Coliemore Roads, then get the DART back to the city. This is for a walk, (and it's fab), so no time committments!

Anyway, we were thinking of going from Killiney DART around to Killiney Hill Road and climb the hill, for a change!

Looks like there is a 59 bus at stop 3098 at Killiney Hill Road that will take us back near enough to Dun Laoghaire DART.

Unfortunately, the timetable and map for this route is very confusing. What's going on? Does the bus go to Pottery Road and turn around back to Dun Laoghaire, and then to Dalkey? Is it a circular route of sorts? I am struggling to figure it out TBH. The route doesn't seem to flow at all. And although there a huge number of stops on the map, there are only 8 stages on the entire route, which is strange!

I'm just hoping that someone who might live in that area could tell me if I get a bus on K H Road, it will take me either to DL or Dalkey near to the DART.

    Thanks.

Sorry if I am totally useless, and I hold my hand up. But any help would be appreciated. It's the map on DB that got me!

The 59 serves that stop in both directions. Just wait for the bus displaying Dun Laoghaire on the front. If checking the timetable, you're looking for buses from Mackintosh Park towards Dun Laoghaire. Allow about 5 minutes from Mackintosh Park to Killiney Hill Road.

There is a stop at the junction of Killiney Hill Road and Victoria Road, Stop 3099. the 59 turns around at this roundabout and goes back to the junction of Billinclea Road and Cluny Grove, buses along this stretch of road will show either Macintosh Park or Dun Laoighre as the destination in both directions.

Here is stop 3099 on google maps and you will see the steps up to a laneway which will bring you down from the obelisk

The issue you have is that in order to serve Killiney Hill, the bus has to double back on itself in both directions for part of the route along Ballinclea Road, Killiney Road and Killiney Hill Road.

In other words buses in either direction serve those stops on both sides of the road!

The full route is as follows:
Dun Laoghaire Station, Marine Road, George's Street Upper, Glasthule Road, Sandycove Road, Breffni Road, Ulverton Road, Dalkey, Barnhill Road, Castle Park Road, St Catherine's Road, Albert Road Upper, Avondale Road, Cluny Grove, Ballinclea Road, Killiney Road, Killiney Hill Road, turn around at stop 3099, return down Killiney Hill Road, along Killiney Road, Ballinclea Road, then Rochestown Avenue, Johnstown Road, Pottery Road to terminate at Mackintosh Park.

If you go to stops 3099, 3100 or 3101 you will get a bus back to Dalkey or Dun Laoghaire - just check the front of the bus that it is going to Dun Laoghaire (buses going to Mackintosh Park also serve those stops as they come back down the hill).

Alternatively just walk down Dalkey Avenue - it's not that far a walk.

I appreciate the help here thank you.

So when I am at the bus stop outside Killiney Hill, I look for Dun L as the destination?

That's a great help thanks. It sounds so feckin obvious though when you think about it, so I'm sorry for being so dense. But TBH the route, timetable, and map were very confusing to me!

Indeed it's not that far a walk, and that would be the sensible thing to do!

But when I see a challenge, I go for it, figure out the bus route, get the bus, and all is sorted, so if the knees are bad we can get the bus, if they are good we can walk down Dalkey Avenue.

Thanks so much for the help. Appreciate it.

Yes - look for Dun Laoghaire as the destination and board at one of stops 3099, 3100 or 3101 as the bus comes down the hill.
