Cost of new boiler

So, the heating has packed in on one of the coldest weekends. The boiler is very old and in the long run better replaced then repaired. I have been told repairing it may be difficult because it is so old.

Any knowledgeable people help me with the following?

What is the cost of replacing the gas boiler inc. labor?
What is the cost of replacing the boiler and upgrading the heating controls? It's a 3 bed semi if that makes a difference.
Would the second option be best and apply for a grant? Don't fancy being without heat for too long.

    TIA

Roughly, a new boiler change is 2,000. Add another 800-1000 for controls. All this is subject to looking at the job cause every house is different. The grant is for 560 but getting the job up to SEAI spec can sometime cost the customer more than what their saving by avoiding the grant!

Unless there is major surgery involved on the plumbing you should go for the grant.

You should get 3 to 4 quotes for the upgrade and get them to specify exactly what they will be doing and putting in.

If they try to steer you away from the grant then again ask them what they will be putting in.

Thanks for the replies. I think I'll go the grant route and get the full job done.

Pick your own boiler don't leave it to contractor. There lik cars good and bad one's so beware.
I came across someone recently who had a problem with their boiler only a few years old. When it came to looking for parts was told it's obsolete. Had terrible trouble find the part. No heat in the house for weeks with a young baby and all.
So source you're own boiler to be confident in what you pick.

If you source your own boiler, you might miss out on discounts, and you will certainly end up paying more vat on it (23 percent as opposed to 13.5 percent).

Whilst it is true that there are boilers that are more or less good, I don't know if you could say there are many really bad ones out there. For sure, it is worth finding out about the different brands available yourself and having a serious discussion with the installer about it. But the installation of the boiler is really important to its longevity too. If the pipes are old and full of gunge for example, they will likely wreck a modern condensing boiler if they are not thoroughly cleaned out.

Ya, about the 2k mark is about right. Where are you based? I might be able to recommend someone in your area?

Apologies, just spotted this now. Didn't go the grant route just replaced the boiler for now. It cost €1800 total and that was cash price.
I just hope I get 15 yrs or so out of it.
