Private VAN insurance.

    My questions are:

How can I tax VAN as private? ( I also check previous talking in this forums with same issue) I tried about 10 top google pages results about VAN insurance, and they do not do quotes for private VAN. I found 1 broker who can do insurance for me but its 2500 euro, isn't too much? I'm 27 years old and have full Irish driving license and its my first insurance in Ireland. (I change it from my own country driving license and I hold my country one for 5 years, but is not mentioned on Irish license)

If I will finally register my VAN as commercial, will the insurance will be cheaper than 2500 euro?
If I have to lie to insurance company that I`m self employer to get commercial insurance, will VANl be insured for private driving to shop or work? For example if you vichicale have tax road as commercial you are not allow to use it to go for shop for not work related reasons… its illegal.

What problem I can have if I get car incident?
Can they check if I`m really self employer?
Does it really matter for insurance company if I'm really are self employer on not…

What can I do to get cheaper insurance as possible?
I see only 2 ways no. Lie about that I'm self employed and just quit it and buy for my self other private car.

    Please help.

Yes you can tax a van privately.
You can insure it privately too (but you'll struggle as Ins Co will worry you are using it commercially)

If you lie to get your insurance, then you won't be insured...

I own a van and it's taxed private as I do not have a business.

To tax a van private you have to go into your local motor tax office. To tax is as commercial you need to have a VAT registration number.

Van insurance is always called commercial insurance. I got mine very very cheap from www.insuremyvan.ie. Never lie to an insurance company.

Most commerical van insurance has social domestic pleasure cover so you should still be covered for private use once it has that.

Op, what are you using the van for?

Is this factually correct? What if a sole trader does not earn in excess of 37k and is therefore not registered for VAT? They may well still be using the vehicle commercially yet unable to tax it accordingly? I know several people taxing vans commercially and not registered for vat.

Thanks for answer, my VAN is already registered as private in road tax office.

Insurance companies asking for occupation and I`m office clerk (they probably don't have this option for VAN insurance) so they do not accept this answer. its fine for me to get commercial insurance.... but what about occupation? Probably I need to call back them again. And of course I don't want to lie, I want to have all clear and driving with light heart.

Just going by what I was told in my local tax office. Historically it didn't need a tax number but when I first registered almost 2 years ago I couldn't do it commercial.

I'm a software developer and InsureMyVan accepted that.

Hmm, Are you confusing TAX number with VAT number?

My understanding of it is that the commercial tax form asks for vat number and if you don't have one ie are a sole trader you can put down your pps number.

My understanding is if you don't have a VAT number you have to sign a declaration that the van would only be used commercially.

My dad has a limited company with a vat number and still has to go the garda station although maybe he only does it the first time you tax the van but he definitely had to do it with the new van he got recently.
