    so,

have a light smell of smoke (from an open fire) in my hot press, which is upstairs and beside the breast.
Nothing at the back of the fire - where the pipework from the back boiler is, and nothing in the attic. Put in a Co alarm in the hot press and no alarms since.

did a quick clean of the smoke chamber (just inside the fire opening) and found that a joining of sand & cement from the right side of the chamber missing.
This is where the concrete chimney support would meet the back wall. Present on the left side. The right side is where the pipes are and directly below the hot press.

so how to seal ?. it's probably a 1/2 inch seem by 1 foot.
Use a fire resistant foam or cement ?
Is there a tube filler that could be used ?

Doing a full chimney sweep today and might put my sports camcorder and torch on a hiking pole and do an inspection of the lower section while I'm at it.

edit: found this so might try get some of this this morning, clean chimney and seal up. drying time ??

    K

Is it worth getting someone to check it? I had a smell of smoke in hotpress a while ago and the chimney turned out to be cracked.

If you seal it yourself and carbon monoxide still gets out it could be very dangerous. Does your co2 alarm detect that?
