Just a few questions about layin of semi solid flooring on an old wooden floor, what underlay if any is recommended? Do the boards have to be layed accross the run of the orignal floor, I would like to run the boards through the length of 2 rooms that are seperated by double doors but this is the direction of the original boards, do the joints have to be glued ?

    Hi Sohappy
Have you ever fitted a semi solid floor before ?. There are a lot of guidelines you need to follow for a successful installation. It makes no difference which way you install it but you need to do a lot of pre installation checks first. If you are installing yourself do the following check list first.
    1. get a 3.0m len of timber and make sure it is straight - put it down in different areas of the floor to see if the origional floor is level within 2/3mm under the straight edge. if it,s ok -- thats good. Then you will need to make sure all the origional boards are secure and nailed properly if not secure them all.
    2. When you walk on the origional floor does it sound noisy. If so you need an accoustic underlay to minimise sound tranferrance and turn it up a few inches or mm behind the skirting board.
    3. What type of walls are in the rooms - blocks or stud partitions.
    4. I presume you will be taking off all skirting ?
    5. Are the timber floors that are already there on the ground floor or second floor ?
When you check all out come back to me. Can you put up a few photos
