Credit card passport name different

I am booking with BA because this once they are cheaper than aerlingus.
Has anyone who has flown with them before had this problem:
The name on the booking has to be the name on the passport which is fine. Then later on it it asks if the person paying is flying.
I say yes but when I get to the card details the name field auto populates with my passport name (half a dozen Christian names). This cannot be changed.
How di I book and pay for my flight?
Do I say the person paying is not flying and put in the name on the card?
    Is it that simple?
Why have they designed their website in this rigid manner?

Has anyone else come up against this?

When you are booking, if your name is Charles Philip Arthur George Brian Frederick Windsor, just enter the name of passenger as Charles Windsor.

I have a middle name (just one) on my passport and regularly fly without using it.

There is often a field on a later screen just before you press the button to accept the payment and it's called something like 'name on card' - that's where you can enter the name exactly as it's printed on the card.

Otherwise as advised by Spurious above, just given them your first first name and don't other with the rest of them.

You're not going to get refused boarding at the gate because the boarding card says 'John Murphy' and your passport says 'John Francis Patrick Murphy'.
